Introduction

My name is Lloyd MacNeil. Welcome to my teaching e-portfolio.

I am currently teaching English to M1-3 (G7-9) students at Triamudomsuksa Patthanakarn Ratchada School (TURP) in Bangkok, Thailand. I'm also a student of the 'Graduate Diploma Teaching Profession'' program at Saint Theresa International College (STIC) in Nakhon Nayok, Thailand.

My e-portfolio aims to showcase my learning at STIC as well as some of my teaching experience over the last decade.

My Backstory

I'm a former Canadian marketing executive who had longed to do something more personally meaningful. My love of travel first inspired me to live in another culture. And, I had a hunch that I would love teaching too, so I completed my certification to teach English as a second language.

I started teaching in Thailand in 2016. After four years, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated my return to Canada to care for my elderly parents. I eventually returned to my beloved Thailand in October, 2022.

My Philosophy of Education in a Nutshell

Learning must be a self-esteem building experience for students. Our job, as teachers, is to help them learn first about themselves, to discover their innate talents and abilities, so that they pursue careers and lives that make them happy and productive citizens. Positive teacher-student relationships are essential. It's been said that "one cannot reach the mind until one first touches the heart". In tandem with that, teachers are also required to role model the highest values and standards, positively impacting the next generation.

I follow an integrated student-centric teaching approach, inspired the Constructivist theories of Dewey, Piaget, and Vygotsky. Specifically, I facilitate classrooms of students working together in teams where they discover their learning through collaboration and develop 21st century skills like critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity. My classes are dynamic, technology driven, and confidence building learning experiences.
