Early Talk Boost

Who is the Early Talk Boost intervention aimed at?

The Early Talk Boost intervention is designed for children aged 3-4 with language delay, typically those who have:

-Difficulty listening/paying attention

-Poor vocabulary

-Difficulty understanding language

-Difficulty organising and using language

-Immature sentences

-Difficulty explaining or describing

-Difficulty taking turns

This means children who have intact language learning ability in themselves but for some reason haven’t had the opportunity to develop age-appropriate language skills.

How is the group intervention delivered?

The intervention is delivered 3 times per week during circle/story time by a trained early years practitioner to a group of up to 8 children over a 9 week period. The intervention is supported by an initial training package and includes an Early Talk Boost Tracker to help identify appropriate children for the intervention and to measure their progress. The intervention also includes a workshop for parents/carers to enable them to develop children’s communication and language skills at home.

How does Early Talk Boost support Ofsted?

Ofsted identify the most successful settings have a focus on developing skilled staff. Early Talk Boost can be provided using Early Years Pupil Premium to create a skilled workforce and knowledgeable parents, known to be essential in supporting communication development during a child’s early years.

Talk Boost

Talk Boost is a targeted and evidence-based intervention, which supports language delayed children in Reception and KS1 to make significant progress with their language and communication skills. Delivered by Talk Boost trained teachers and teaching assistants, and is provided three times a week to small groups of children that have been identified with language delay. Each session includes activities that cover the key elements of language:

In total, 120 activities are delivered over 10 weeks. Small group work is enhanced by whole class activities that the teacher delivers each week to ensure a focus on language permeates the wider classroom. The programme aims to engage parents and carers in supporting language activities through a variety of activities which the learners take home for parents and carers to work through.

Evidence shows that 50% of children in some parts of the UK, are starting school with language skills that are under-developed for their age. This ‘language delay’ hampers children’s ability to learn, achieve and make friends. It significantly impacts on their literacy and numeracy development. Many of these children have the potential to ‘catch up’ but only if they receive timely intervention and support. Talk Boost is a structured and robustly evidenced programme that can boost a child’s communication by an average of 18 months after ten weeks of intervention.
