Summer 2 2016
After an amazing time at Barton Hall for our residential trip and our Space topic now finished, we need something to bring us back down to earth!
So, as requested by the children, our last topic this academic year is the long awaited ‘dinosaur’ topic!
We will investigate the wonders of the prehistoric world, finding answers to long-awaited questions such as …‘what it the biggest dinosaur?’ ‘How did the dinosaurs become extinct?’ As well as lots more!
Our Current topic for this half of term is 'Earth and Beyond'. Please open the Summer Term letter to find out more. Here is some of the exciting activities we covered this term:
Golitha Falls - Geography Trip
During this term in Geography we have been learning about rivers and mountains (linked to our Earth and Beyond). We enjoyed a fabulous trip to Golitha Falls, which is home to The Fowey River in Cornwall The children learnt about the different feautues of rivers, the effect rivers have on local habitats, as well as other interesting facts. The children walked along the river and explored its many features as well as discussing erosion and pollution.
Space Odyssey Planetarium Visit
The children had a wonderful day exploring space in the planetarium! The children learnt many exciting facts about space including, the different planets, stars, astronuats (focusing mainly on Tim Peake) amongst many other exciting facts! We would like to say a big 'Thank you' to Simon from Space Odyssey who made this visit so enjoyable and informative - the parents and children would love him to return soon!
Spring 1: GREAT FIRE OF LONDON: Life in Stuart Times (SPRING 1)
In the first part of the Spring Term the children learnt about Life in the Stuart Times. This unit is designed to take children on an exciting journey back to in time to 17th Century London, in the era of the Plague and the Great Fire of London.
This is the London of Charles II, Sir Christopher Wren and the diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn.
The children will learn about the ‘cures’ for plague sold by so-called quack doctors. They will be fascinated by the curious fashions and fads of the time. The children will be immersed in a time and place that might feel vaguely familiar to them, for example, chatting in coffee shops, but strange in others, for example, men wearing strange peaked wigs as a fashion statement!
The children loved finding out about the historcial facts, particularly the plague. They had lots of fun burning down their hand - made Stuart houses!
Spring 2: Ancient Greeks (SPRING 2)
We learnt lots about these fascinating people and discovered the lasting influence of the Ancient Greeks on the western world. We also investigated the timeline and the four main periods of the Greek Empire, as well as exploring different kinds of historical sources and evaluating their usefulness. Additionally, we marvelled at Alexander the Great and the empire under his leadership and learnt about trading and design, researching lifestyle and clothing, and studyed the key Ancient Greek buildings. Also, we learnt about the roles and rights of free men, women, children and slaves in Ancient Greece and research democracy during this era. Finally, we looked at the exciting Olympics and its modern legacy.
We were particularly proud of our Greek pots!
