YOUTUBE IS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS IN PSD!

WAIT....WHAT? ...YES

  • WHEN? It became available in February of 2018
  • RESTRICTED MODE WILL BE TURNED ON FOR STUDENT STATELINER ACCTS
  • TEACHERS WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO APPROVE VIDEOS THAT ARE RESTRICTED BUT EDUCATIONAL VALUABLE

WHAT IS RESTRICTED MODE?

  • Restricted Mode is an optional setting that you can use to help screen out potentially mature content that you may prefer not to see or don’t want others to see as well as the ability to see comments on videos or be able to comment or use social media tools .
      • Videos containing potentially mature content will not be shown to viewers who have Restricted Mode turned on.
        • Drugs and alcohol: Talking about drug use or abuse, or drinking alcohol in videos.
        • Sexual situations: Overly detailed conversations about or depictions of sex or sexual activity. Some educational, straightforward content about sexual education, affection, or identity may be included in Restricted Mode, as well as kissing or affection that's not overly sexualized or the focal point of the video.
        • Violence: Graphic descriptions of violence, violent acts, natural disasters and tragedies, or even violence in the news.
        • Mature subjects: Videos that cover specific details about events related to terrorism, war, crime, and political conflicts that resulted in death or serious injury, even if no graphic imagery is shown.
        • Profane and mature language: Inappropriate language, including profanity.
        • Incendiary and demeaning content: Video content that is gratuitously incendiary, inflammatory, or demeaning towards an individual or group.
  • YouTube Reviews EVERY VIDEO SUBMITTED.

HOW DOES RESTRICTED MODE WORK?

There are two ways a video can end up being unavailable when Restricted Mode is turned on.

  • Primarily, our automated system looks at signals like the video’s metadata, title, and the language used in the video.
  • Additionally, some videos may not be available in Restricted Mode as a result of human reviewers applying an age restriction to a video.

Teacher Requirements:

  • You Tube videos must be previewed by the teacher.
  • Teachers will have the ability to approve a YouTube video if it is not available in the restricted portal.
  • Use YouTube as a teaching tool. Some great teaching tips for successful implementation include:
    • Use Google Classroom, Google Slides, Google Forms, or another tool to disburse quality YouTube content to students instead of having students search on their own.
    • Keep in mind to structure assignments according to age appropriateness when students are searching on YouTube. For example, students ages 13 and older would use the tools and features on YouTube differently than primary or elementary students. Older students may search freely where a teacher of younger students would give students specific video links to use.
    • Some sites that are useful in removing suggest content when using a YouTube video are:
      • SafeYouTube
      • SafeShare - (This site works with vimeo videos as well. It does not link back to YouTube on the video. There is a free and premium version. As a district we do not subscribe to the premium subscription.)
    • Teachers should not allow students to use a device with the teacher login and Teachers should NEVER share login/password information with students.
    • Review content of Phillipsburg School District Policies Regarding the Use of Technology in an age appropriate manner with your students. Specifically Policies 7523 SCHOOL DISTRICT PROVIDED TECHNOLOGY DEVICES TO PUPILS ; and 2361 ACCEPTABLE USE OF COMPUTER NETWORK/COMPUTERS AND RESOURCES
