In the Time of the Butterflies is historical fiction. It is also a frame story composed of non-linear, polyphonic episodes. Each aspect of the novel’s structure is composed of different elements that harmonize with or play against each other (aka juxtaposition), but to what end? When you consider the structural elements’ juxtaposition, you may also consider the dynamics they establish (cause and effect, problem solution, or compare and contrast) and the significance of the established dynamic(s).
How do the novel’s structure and structural elements play a role in either normalizing the Mirabal sisters’ heroism or answer Alvarez’s question, “What politicizes a person?”?
