June 2025
Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
Welcome to 5th grade! Below you will find your Math and Reading summer work for this summer. Your supply list is on a different page. That tab can be found above at the top of the page.
Students need to continue practicing the Math skills that they learned in 4th grade. Students will complete Math work on the IXL website, practicing on the 5th grade level. Students should practice on IXL each week, mastering the required skills. Students should also be sure to practice their basic math skills of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. There will be a test on the required skills the second week of school.
All incoming 5th graders are to read From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. Students must also complete a shoebox museum project for the required book which will be due the first Friday of the school year, August 29th. PLEASE DO NOT BRING PROJECTS IN EARLY! A page describing the project and the rubric that goes with it is attached to this packet. Students will take a test on this book during the first week of school.
I hope you have a fun, safe, and healthy summer and enjoy your time with your families. I look forward to seeing you in August. Have a wonderful summer!
Sincerely,
Ms. Jennifer Cripps

Shoebox Museum Summer Reading Project - 2025
Shoebox Museum - Create a “shoebox museum” displaying artifacts representing the time period and setting of The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler (your Summer Reading book). You will be creating a display similar to the ones you see in museums. In your shoebox museum, you must have at least 8 items. The inside of the box must be decorated and all items must be labeled inside the box.. Write a brief description (1-2 sentences) about what each item is and why it is important to the story/character and display the descriptions on the outside of the box. If you are including any artworks from the museum, make sure you have the name of the artwork and the artist labeled. The descriptions may be typed or handwritten. Be creative in making your display!
You could include things like:
different items from the museum
a map of places visited or traveled to
a drawing of settings in the story
items that would be important to characters in the book.
A rubric for this project below. Make sure you follow the guidelines provided for it. An example of this project is posted below the rubric.
