Dear Families,
My name is Mrs. Pacheco, and I am so excited to be your child’s teacher next year! A little bit about me is that I used to be a Special Education Teacher, this will be my 4th year of teaching, and I am currently going back to get my masters in Instruction of Reading to teach students different ways to read.
Over the summer, please have them work on number (1-20) and letter recognition (being able to point to a number/ letter and recognize it), practice writing their name, cutting, and reading with your child. Students should also know what upper- and lower-case letters are. During the school year, we will introduce letter sounds if you would like to review those as well.
In order to practice these skills, you can have your child practice cutting straight lines on paper. For number and letter recognition, you can sing the ABCs, practice counting 1-20, and write down numbers or letters and have them say what it is. With printing their name, you should write it and they will copy it and/or write their name in highlighter and your child can trace it. Lastly, please read books with your child throughout the summer. This gets them engaged and excited about reading. Throughout the year, we do reading/listening comprehension if you would like to ask, “What happened in the story?” Comprehension can also be practiced through their daily lives such as watching tv. You may also ask “What happened?” during the TV show/ movie.
There are also numerous online resources that your child can practice these skills over the summer. These include IXL, PBS kids, math playground, Starfall, Epic, Khan Academy kids, ABCya etc. If you look these websites up online, they are all free and accessible for everyone.
For Kindergarten-1st grade, we recommend getting the summer bridge book. It is on Amazon and students will be able to practice skills 15 minutes a day. It has phonics, handwriting, counting, science, and fitness activities to review over the summer to be prepared for kindergarten.
If you ever have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at kshepheard@stanthonynet.org. Have a great summer!
Sincerely,
Ms. Shepheard
