Dear Incoming Third Grade Parents/ Guardians,
Welcome to third grade! As you know, many academic skills tend to regress over the summer months. Below you will find recommendations and suggestions to help your child to prepare for third grade. The stronger these skills are, the easier the transition to third grade will be.
All students are required to work on the Summer Bridge Activities Book from grade 2 into 3. Multiplication and division pages do not need to be done. The book should be brought to school on the first day.
Math
Children entering third grade should have their addition and subtraction facts memorized for quick recall. We will have frequent drills on facts. Children should practice current grade level math skills on the website www.ixl.com using their current password. There are numerous other websites that would be good for review, and some are listed below. The children should work on problems at the second grade level.

Reading
The children are required to read a book of their choice from The Magic Tree House series and complete the attached book report pages and bring them to school on the first day. Oral and silent reading are both very important. Please have your child read on a daily basis. Fluency will only improve with practice. Reading comprehension also improves with fluency. Third grade requires a greater deal of content reading with Science and Social Studies. Children need to be able to understand what they read.
Thank you for your help. Have a safe and happy summer. I look forward to working with you and your child next school year.
