Week of 1/14

This week we will have math homework nightly and a Spelling test on Friday and Spelling Contract (20 pts.) due on Friday. The Spelling words for this week are: cannot, pancake, maybe, baseball, playground, someone, myself, classroom, sunshine, outside, upon, nothing, into, inside, nobody, everywhere. The alternate list words are: took, books, foot, hoof, cook, nook, hood, wood, stood, crook, cookbook, into, inside, nobody, everywhere.

If you have any Keepsake book pages to send in, please do so. Let me know if you need another copy of anything. The family Coat of Arms is coming home this week and will be due 2/1.

The Famous American Poster Project is due 1/22. Don't hesitate to contact me for any questions you have on any projects.

Remember to send in your child's Baptism page for their Keepsake Book. It was due on 9/28. The next page for the Keepsake Book is for researching a Saint. I sent home two sheets for this. Please pick one. If your child has a Patron Saint, use the Patron Saint page but if not, use the other page to research a Saint of choice. This was due on 10/19.

I sent a family tree home that you can fill out with your child. Your child is welcome to color it. It will go into your child's Keepsake book. It was due 11/30. Let me know if you need another copy of anything.

Look for a Go Math book page and a Reteach packet nightly. The Reteach packet demonstrates all the lessons for this chapter along with a few practice problems. The class will do one page in the Reteach packet a night along with a math book page. Both are due next day but if something comes up, just send me an email and let me know. Also let me know if your child had difficulties with the work. If we have a math test or launch a new chapter, there will be no math homework.

Reading Logs are due every Monday or first day of the school week, so that your child will have the weekend to do any catch up reading if necessary.

IXL will be checked on Monday as well. The goal for IXL is 20 minutes per week. Please contact me if you need information about signing in, etc.

Other Reminders:

Clearly label all of you child's gym clothes, uniform sweaters and outerwear.

Lunches are available in the cafeteria. Please check the school website for the menu if you don't receive one in your Friday Folder.

Please sign your child's Friday Folder and send it back (empty) on Monday or sometime during the week.

Your child needs to bring a water bottle and snack every day. We have extra snacks if your child doesn't have one.

Remember that gym is on Thursday and your child should come to school wearing a gym uniform.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone who were able to come to Back to School Night. It was great to catch up with families and meet new ones. If you were not able to come, please stop into the classroom so that we can meet and also discuss Sacrament prep and plans. We are going to have a great year!

Dates to Remember:

1/22 Famous American Poster Project due.

2/1 Family Coat of Arms is due.

Sacrament Information:

It's going to be an exciting year as your student moves onto 2nd grade. It is a special sacramental year so as you can imagine, there are preparations to be made. Please contact the DRE of your parish to register your child in the Reconciliation and First Eucharist programs. You should receive a schedule of dates for meetings, retreats, rehearsals and the actual Reconciliation and First Eucharist events. I will need the dates and times scheduled for your child's Reconciliation and First Eucharist at your parish. Please send me an email as soon as you have a date and time for both sacraments.

Meanwhile, the 2nd grade will be focusing on the sacraments here in the classroom. We will be making a Keepsake book to be presented to your child at the May Crowning Mass. Stay tuned for Keepsake book assignments that will be coming home in your child's Homework Folder during the year.

The May Crowning Mass is a big event for the 2nd graders. Look for a date and time set in May. Please plan to attend. Your child will wear their communion clothes or church appropriate clothes to celebrate both their sacraments and Our Mother Mary. Lifetouch will be available for pictures. Your child will receive their Keepsake Books at this time.

Weekly Work:

Please record, or have your child record their reading on a daily basis. Your child should be reading 15-20 minutes 5 times a week. The Reading Log is due every Monday.

We are using monthly Spelling Contracts for nightly spelling homework. We will keep these contracts in the folder with pockets and paper fasteners which was listed in the 2nd grade supply list. The written work can be completed in the Spelling Journal which is one of the green composition books you purchased in the office. There are some choices on the contract that cannot be written in the Spelling Journal. Please initial and date these choices on your child's contract and send it back on Friday. Please have your child pick 4 choices for practicing spelling words each week or fulfill 20 points. If we have a four day week, your child only needs to fulfill 15 points. Everyone's spelling words will be written in their agendas every Monday. There will be a Spelling Test on Friday or the last day of the week. The Spelling Contract folder will be due then as well.

Special Schedule for 2018/19:

Monday: Computer, Spanish

Tuesday: Art

Wednesday: Library

Thursday: Gym, Music

Our math classes will focus on meeting Math Fact benchmarks as well as addition and subtraction of 2 and 3 digit numbers, time, fractions, measurement, problem solving and the reading of and recording of data.
