Haas background
The Haas Center for Public Service inspires Stanford University to realize a just and sustainable world through service, scholarship, and community partnerships. It is the hub of Cardinal Service, a university-wide effort to make service an essential feature of a Stanford education.
Opportunities could include:
Panel discussions: the panel could focus on specific areas of public service or functional areas such as marketing, fundraising, public relations;
Sharing fellows’ experience in smaller groups, such as over a meal: leadership, career choices, how to think about your next career step, what to include in an effective interview or resume;
Mentoring/advising students during the summer and postgraduate fellowships;
Providing expertise and feedback for student groups. How to recruit and retain new members, PR, fundraising;
Planning for next year’s Democracy Day and/or StanfordVotes; or
Evolving and marketing the campaign What do you StandFor?
Cardinal Quarter Opportunities
Cardinal Quarter is a campus-wide initiative that offers undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in a full-time, quarter-long public service experience designed to integrate academic learning with field-based experience. Nearly 500 opportunities are offered each year through close to 30 campus partners involved in the Cardinal Quarter initiative. Students can pursue prearranged placements or self-designed opportunities in both domestic and international settings and receive a stipend award for the experience. Students typically do Cardinal Quarter Fellowships in the summer.
At the Haas Center, we take several steps to help students prepare for their service experiences. On-campus mentors are a key component in this process. Mentors meet with the student at least once in the spring quarter and again in the fall to help highlight academic and other options to assist the student with the preparation for, and later reflection upon, the service learning experiences. If this opportunity to mentor undergraduate fellows is of interest to you, please reach out to Meghann Tovar, Program Director - Undergraduate Fellowships at the Haas Center (mztovar@stanford.edu).
