Mohammad Shahrokh Esfahani, PhD

My name is Mohammad Shahrokh Esfahani, a computational biologist and engineer by training! I am currently an Instructor of Oncology in the Division of Oncology at Stanford School of Medicine. Prior to that, I was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Division of Oncology at Stanford School of Medicine (from January 2015 to September 2020) working under mentorship of Dr. Ash Alizadeh and Dr. Max Diehn. I am currently interested in studying circulating tumor DNA and cell-free DNA to better understand their origin and from there, extract and model both genetic and epigenetic information content circulating in our body fluids, and in particular bloodstream. My specific interest is to develop (noninvasive) assays and the corresponding machine learning and statistical models to address variety of problems in precision medicine: early cancer detection, cancer patient risk modeling, response to treatment assessment, etc.

I received my PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Machine Learning and Genomic Signal Processing from Texas A&M University in 2014 and my Master of Science and undergrad both in EE from Sharif University of Technology and University of Tehran, respectively.
