Fruit Ninja: Comet Blade Edition

Mission

The discovery of a cryptic signal from a crashed UFO revealed a shocking truth: humanity is not alone in the universe. In response, the Extraterrestrial Life Task Force (ELTF) was formed—a team of top-tier scientists, engineers, and adventurers dedicated to finding evidence of extraterrestrial life. Their mission took them beyond the boundaries of known space.

While the mission was groundbreaking, the long stretches of isolation began to weigh heavily on the crew. With no escape from the monotony, frustration grew, and morale plummeted. To combat this, ELTF leadership called for the development of a creative outlet to break up the tedium and re-energize the team. The result was the Space-themed Diversion from Listlessness (SpaDL)—a unique activity designed to lift spirits and rekindle focus.

Drawing inspiration from the classic game Fruit Ninja, our team created Fruit Ninja: Comet Blade Edition. This space-themed twist on the original lets players wield the comet blade (their hand) to slice through waves of cosmic fruit in an exciting 60-second challenge. It’s a high-energy diversion that injects fun and excitement into the mission, ensuring the crew stays as sharp as their Comet Blade sword and motivated for the discoveries ahead.

How to play

Start by inserting two coins on the left. The LED lights will flash when the coins are detected.

Adjust the difficulty using the knob on the lower right- the difficulty sets the speed at which the "fruit" appear. The LED lights will change colors based on the speed; red is the hardest!

Click "Equip" to start slicing! As soon as an LED strip lights up, wave your hand through the gap and the lights will turn off as soon as the game detects the slice. All colors except red represent fruit, so be sure to watch out for the red bombs- slicing a bomb will reset your score to zero.

Functionalities

IR sensors: Detect coins and slices.

Potentiometer: Used to set the difficulty level, which corresponds to how quickly fruits appear.

Servo Motors: Used as timer and score counter.

LED strips: Randomly generated colors, representing the fruit to be sliced.

Game Interactions

Insert coins: After inserting the coins, you will hear music.

Twist the knob: You are setting the difficulty level. Turning it clockwise increases the difficulty. You should notice the LED strips changing colors; red indicates the hardest difficulty. Once you start the game, the difficulty cannot be changed.

Hit the "Equip" button: This signifies the start of the game.

Slice: After slicing, you should notice changes in the timer and score counters. The LED strips will turn off as soon as a slice is detected.

Music: Background music (BGM) plays throughout the game. If you slice a bomb, you will hear a rather sad audio ):

Timer: The timer hand moves counterclockwise, one second at a time, until 60 seconds have passed.

Score Counter: The hand moves clockwise. If you successfully slice a fruit, the score increases by one. If you accidentally slice a bomb, the score resets to zero.

LED strips: Different colors will appear when adjusting the difficulty knob. They will also flash when a coin is detected. Colors are generated randomly during the game to represent fruit appearances. When the 20-second no action timer expires, the LEDs illuminate red. At the end of the 60 seconds of gameplay, the LEDs will illuminate purple.
