Pastoral Letter by Deacon Mark

"All will be well."

All will be well.

In the first reading, we hear Daniel, the very person who was protected from ravenous lions by God, describe a time of unsurpassed distress. As Sr. Mary McGlone writes, what could be so distressing to a man who spent the night locked up with lions?

It is easy to doubt that all will be well when we look at the crisis of modern society. It doesn't matter which side you're on, politically, to be very disturbed by the divisions that we feel. We've always agreed that while there may be many ways to achieve the common good, that destination - that we as a people have a common belief in "goodness" - was something we truly had in common. That in the end, our neighbors weren't the demons in our society, but things like poverty, disease, and hunger were the true battles.

And so I turn to Julian of Norwich, the medieval English mystic. Most famously, she wrote 17 words of hope and joy: "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.”

This is not a phrase that encourages you avoid the world around you. I once had a friend whom I called a turtle, because any time there was trouble on the horizon, he pulled his head into his shell and hoped it would all go away. That's not the message here! Pope Francis wrote last year that Julian of Norwich demonstrated "faith in God's loving providence and holiness of life expressed in generous service to our brothers and sisters in need." The Pope continued, "It is my hope that through a greater appreciation of the life of Mother Julian, Christians today will be encouraged to follow ever more faithfully and joyfully the example of Jesus, the one who came 'not to be served but to serve'".

After Julian's revelation, she spent 15 years pondering those simple words. How can it be, she wondered, when we see greed, corruption, and horror all around us? When God finally revealed the meaning of "all will be well" and true understanding finally emerged, she explained it in this way:

Know it well, love was his meaning. Who reveals it to you? Love. What did he reveal to you? Love. Why does he reveal it to you? For love. Remain in this, and you will know more of the same. But you will never know different, without end. So I was taught that love is our Lord’s meaning.

In the book of Daniel, the message is not about horror and destruction, but consolation; we hear that, in the end, the wise will shine brightly and be like stars forever. All will be well. And Julian of Norwich shows us the path: Love. And not just "love", but the kind of love that Christ preached.

One more quote from the Pope with respect to Julian's revelation of love: "In this regard, I pray that all who face the pressing challenges of war, injustice, ecological disaster or spiritual poverty may be consoled and strengthened by these enduring words of wisdom."

God bless.

-Deacon Mark

2025 Season of Stewardship

Every year, parishioners are asked to participate in the Annual Stewardship Appeal by making an assessment of their TIME, TALENT, and TREASURE and discerning how God is calling them to use these gifts in the coming year. This process began last week with witness from fellow parishioners given via video at all the Masses (watch the video at https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/1025606748).

Parishioners are invited to continue to pray and discern what their commitment will be in the coming year and then to complete their commitment cards. We ask for every household to complete their commitment by December 8, 2024 by returning the card in the Sunday offertory, returning it to the rectory, or completing the form online at www.standrew.org/stewardship

The full stewardship brochure has helpful information about the state of the parish and thoughtful questions to help you on your discernment. Please find the brochure at https://standrew.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/STewardship-2024-5-Brochure-final.pdf

Keep in mind that the response card is not a contractual agreement but rather an exercise in thoughtful and intentional stewardship by all members of the parish. Thank you for all you do to support Saint Andrew Parish.

Annual Blessing of Wreaths

The Advent Wreath is an important symbol to Catholics as we prepare for Christmas by lighting one candle for each week of Advent. Family/Individual wreaths that are used at home will be blessed after the 9:00am Mass on Sunday, December 1, 2024. Please bring your wreath or have a lovely wreath ordered for you to pick up and make just prior to the blessing. Please RSVP by November 26 to ensure your wreath will be on hand (only a few extra will be available). To read full description and order your wreath, visit https://standrew.org/post/blessing-of-the-advent-wreaths-2024/

The Giving Tree Project

Since 2015, Saint Andrew Church and School has partnered with Saint Mary of the Lake and St. Thomas of Canterbury, located in the Uptown neighborhood, with a Christmas service project through a Giving Tree.  Saint Andrew has helped students ranging from Pre-K thru 8th grade stay warm over the cold, winter, Chicago months.

The Giving Trees will be located in the back of the Church and in the School and be up and stocked with ornaments the weekend prior to the Thanksgiving holiday (November 23-24).  That is when Saint Andrew families will be able to select these ornaments off the trees and begin their holiday shopping.  We will announce future deadlines on when items need to be collected, but for now, we hope to see you this Sunday!

CCHD Annual Second Collection

At all Masses next weekend (November 23/24), there will be a second collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD). The CCHD is the nationally directed fund that is organized by the Catholic Church in the United States and dedicates itself to breaking the cycle of poverty. The CCHD funds community programs that encourage independence and development. With your generous donations, it will give those in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Please be generous during the second collection or https://www.givecentral.org/customizable-online-giving/299/event/26889.

New Musical Setting for Mass

While the words in the ritual prayers of Mass don't change much, the melodies change from culture, to culture, parish to parish, and season to season. In particular, the music to the sung parts of the Mass have different settings (Gospel Acclamations, Sanctus, Lamb of God, etc.). We are introducing a new setting at Saint Andrew which will begin its use on the First Sunday of Advent (December 1). These settings can be found in our Gather hymnal starting at number 270. Take a moment to listen and learn the (new to us) setting by watching the videwo found at https://vimeo.com/1027015367?share=copy
