Happy Mothers day to all our mothers!
There will be a blessing at every Mass this weekend for mothers and expectant mothers. Please come up to the sanctuary at the end of Mass when instructed by the presider.
"God is with you at every ending, at every beginning, and during all of the in-between times."
Happy Mother's Day!
The scriptures this weekend emphasize endings and beginnings. I like to put it in that order – endings and beginnings – because it helps to emphasize two things about today’s feast; two things about how our lives unfold.
Over and over again in our lives, we experience this pattern. Friends move, relationships end, we change careers, we experience death and separation. Each of these is an ending, and these times can be sad and a bit scary. I’m sure that the disciples were disappointed that just when they were becoming comfortable with the resurrected Jesus, he left them again. But he left them with a mission, a promise of what was to come: To go out and preach and teach everyone about the new kingdom that Jesus brought to the world.
The ending of Jesus’ post-resurrection time as a direct presence in their lives was filled with grief, but the new opportunity, the new mission, would fill their lives and would influence the course of events still today, thousands of years later.
The interplay of endings and beginnings is a paradox. We don’t want things to change, we want to remain in the comfortable. But without change, we know that growth isn’t possible. And whether we want it or not, change will happen. Our lives are a long sequence of endings and beginnings. That’s the first emphasis of the Feast of the Assumption.
But I’m glossing over something that’s often pretty significant, aren’t I? Because between the ending and the beginning, there is the in-between time. This is a place of anxiety, stress, and worry. We may feel a little lost, a little uncertain about what to do. In this period, we mourn the loss and worry about the future.
But remember that the Ascension is about endings and beginnings, not endings and turning back the clock to do it again. The second emphasis of today’s feast is that we have to focus not on going back, but instead on the new beginning that lies ahead. We grieve for the past, but hope for the future.
And what kind of a world do you wish it to be? What changes in our social, political, and interpersonal lives should remain as part of a beginning? The disciples never wanted Jesus to leave, but because he did, and with the power of the Holy Spirit, they were able to do things they might never have dreamed. Likewise, our focus has to be on our hope for the future, on returning the world not to the way it was, but to something better, something more caring, something more compassionate toward those around us.
The good news is we don’t do it alone. God is with you at every ending, at every beginning, and during all of the in-between times. We are never alone, and that is a pretty good promise for our future.
