Autumn No. 7, Friday 1st November 2019

Gospel of the Week

(The 31st Sunday of Ordinary Time - Year C)

Zacchaeus

Jesus was going through the city of Jericho. In Jericho there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a wealthy, very important tax collector. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but he was too short to see above the crowd. He ran ahead to a place where he knew Jesus would come. He climbed a sycamore tree so he could see Jesus. When Jesus came to that place, he looked up and saw Zacchaeus in the tree. He said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down! I must stay at your house today.”

Zacchaeus came down quickly. He was pleased to have Jesus in his house. All the people saw this and began to complain, “Look at the kind of man Jesus stays with. Zacchaeus is a sinner!”

But Zacchaeus said to the Lord, “I will give half of my money to the poor. If I have cheated anyone, I will pay that person back four times more!”

Jesus said, “Salvation has come to this house today. This man truly belongs to the family of Abraham. The Son of Man came to find lost people and save them.”

Luke 19:1-10

Treating Staff With Respect

Please be considerate and polite while you are in and around the school premises. All of our staff and pupils deserve and have the right to work and learn in a school where they are treated with respect and politeness at all times. Anyone who engages in threatening, violent or abusive conduct, whether physically or verbally will run the risk of being asked to stay away from the school for a period of time.

Please speak to our staff in a polite and courteous manner, there is no need for raised or angry voices at any time while visitors are on the school premises and its surroundings.

MOBO Review

As usual the children took centre stage at this year's St Winefride's MOBO Awards.

Once more the performance level was outstanding and the range of songs chosen was as wide as it has ever been, from Mr Savin's favourite era, the 60's, with Chubby Checker and the Temptations, right up to Michael Kiwanuka and Stormzy.

We would like to thank all of the staff for helping to prepare the children so well for the performance and, obviously, the children for performing so well on the day.

Anyone who was there, or if you watch it on the video on our website, which will be uploaded soon, will wonder how this item has reached this far without mentioning the hosts of the show, Corby and Mya! They did an exceptional job hosting and presenting the show from start to finish without help from any adult at all. All Mr Underwood and Mrs Brosnan had to do was watch the show like everyone else! For those of you who attend our assemblies regularly will know that Mr Savin stands in the corner playing with running the slide show on the computer. Well last week even he had a rest as Oscar ran the entire show on his own.

It truly was a show put together and organised by the children and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

110th Anniversary

Next Friday, 8th November, we are celebrating both St Winefride's Day and also the 110th Anniversary of the school opening.

We will be having many distinguished guests including Bishop Alan Williams, Rt Hon Stephen Timms (Prospective Parliamentary Candidate), Robert Simpson (Director of Education for the Diocese of Brentwood), Maria Shepherd (Deputy Director of Education for the Diocese of Brentwood), Sister Jude (Brentwood Education Service), Julianne Marriott (Head of Education for Newham), many Head Teachers from both local Catholic and Non Catholic schools, Governors from both St Winefride's and other schools, local councillors and even some former pupils of the school.

In preparation the children will be rehearsing the hymns for the service and preparing one or two surprises for our guests!

Our New School Leaders!

As we mentioned above, Corby, Mya and Oscar did an absolutely marvellous job in running and presenting the MOBO awards before the half term break, so good in fact that they took over from Mr Underwood, Mrs Brosnan and Mr Savin for the afternoon, as you can see from the pictures below! They were so good at their new jobs that no one noticed any difference. Unfortunately they have to go to lessons occasionally, so Mr Underwood and his team had to go back to work properly when we returned to school after the half term break.

Mr Underwood - Corby

As you can see Corby is hard at work, with the vitally important highlighter just within reach!

Mrs Brosnan - Mya

Mya, however, just like Mrs Brosnan has a perfectly tidy desk and has completed all her work and is now deciding on who she will help out next.

Mr Savin - Oscar

Oscar, astonishingly, has the same work ethic as Mr Savin, both need at least two monitor screens and also a lap top (out of shot) running at all times.

Art News

Here is Nathan, class 6H, with Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz, OBE at the "Our Newham" art exhibition at Stratford Town Hall on 24th October. This was a showcase of artwork and poetry from young people living in Newham run by the charity "Protection Approaches" with support from the Mayor of London to explore issues around identity, community and how we can tackle prejudice. Nathan had four exhibits: paintings entitled "Back to Roots", "How do we feel?" and "All about me", and a collaborative sculpture entitled "Where do we come from?" Some of the works will now be on display at the Newham Council offices in Dockside.

Parent Governor Election

As you may have heard there is going to be a General Election on 12th December 2019 (Please register to vote if you have not already done so, follow this link: https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote to register), but before that there is a much more important vote coming up. the forms for the election of a new Parent/Carer Governor have been sent out, please read the information, choose your preferred candidate, complete the form and return it to school by 12 noon on Wednesday 6th November 2019 at the latest.

Coffee Morning

Miss Khanom's Coffee morning is up and running again on Fridays. Pop in just after 9 o'clock for a drink and a chat and also to see the children perform a song from last week's assembly. Members of the Parent/Carers Forum are also usually around for a chat.

The Rehearsals for the Parent/Carer Choir performance on 8th November are also underway, follow this link to see the song that the choir will be performing: 10,000 Reasons

Just One Tree

The Education Space, part of the council that deals with education and training, have joined forces with 'Just One Tree' a small charity that plants a tree for £1 with the aim of planting a forest in the name of the children of Newham. Once completed we will receive a certificate to display at school along with details of where our trees have been planted.

To take part we are having a Non-Uniform Day on Friday 22nd November 2019 and would ask each child that comes to school in Non-Uniform to bring in £1 so that a tree may be planted for them.

This ties in with our new ESR Curriculum, in the Environmental Stewardship Strand, and we hope you will join us in supporting this very good cause.

Swimming

Once again our Year 3 children will be going to the London Aquatic Centre to take part in their intensive swimming course.

This year the children will be having the lessons during the first two weeks of the Spring Term, beginning on Monday 6th January 2020 and continuing until Friday 17th January 2020.

Due to escalating travel costs, the coach was going to cost over £3,000 for the two weeks, the children will be travelling by public transport and therefore will be attending the sessions wholly during the school day so the children will not have to arrive early at school as was previously the case.

A letter will be going out shortly to the Year 3 children giving full information.

As usual there are 15 spaces available for children who are less confident in the water and who would like to have additional lessons. Again a letter will be sent out and places will be allocated by a random ballot if more children apply than we have places for.

Before and After School Clubs

The After School Clubs are now up and running. Unfortunately Cricket is cancelled next week (6th November).

This Week's Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We know that when we meet Jesus, it will be a life-changing experience.

Thank you for sending him into our world to seek and save the lost.

In his name we pray.

Amen.
