Aspire and Flourish
Friday 25th September
Sunday's Gospel reminds us of the importance of actions over empty promises. There are many times in our lives when it may be easier to not fulfil a promise. The parable of the two sons shows us the importance of actions and humility.
Value of the term: Forgiveness
It has been another busy week at St Thomas More. Our Junior Chaplains have had the joy of celebrating Mass at St John the Baptist Cathedral in Norwich today. It is an excellent opportunity for our Chaplains to deepen their faith and develop their formation and bring lots of knowledge back to their classroom prayer and liturgy. Each week, our Junior Chaplains lead prayer and liturgy within their classrooms and focus on the mission from our Monday Celebration of the Word assembly - talk to your children about this each week!
As a reminder, we are a completely nut-free school. It is imperative that all families support this policy in order that we keep children with allegies safe. Thank you for your continued support with this.
I would like to remind all families that children who need to bring mobile telephones to school should drop these off at the School Office each morning and collect them in the afternoon. Under no circumstances should children have phones on the playground or in the classroom. Again, thank you for your continued support with this matter.
Thank you to our Year Four parents who came and joined us for the information afternoon about the multiplication check. Remember, children should be practicing their times tables every day; it helps with all areas of maths!
Loving God, You have already shown the way to those who hunger and thirst. Please fill my heart and soul with Your love, Lord, who suffered because You loved first. Amen.

October half term begins
This week we have been reading the book Ruby's Worry and have been learning about all of our emotions.
This week our focus is science, naming the different parts of the body and singing the song ‘heads, shoulders, knees and toes’. The children have learnt to read, recognise and write their first three phonics sounds ‘m’ ‘a’ and ‘s’. We have been developing our core strength using the new climbing equipment in our garden. In RE we have learnt that God made each of us, we are all special and God wants us to value and respect everyone.
This week in English we are looking at a new story called ‘Beegu’. We are continuing to focus on writing a simple sentence with a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop at the end. In Maths, we are focusing on counting back from any number within 10 and finding 1 less than a given number. In RE, we are learning about the ‘Nicene Creed’ and we will be going on a wonder walk to see what God has made in the world around us. In Science we are continuing to learn about animal groups and the characteristics of each group. In handwriting we are focusing on letters - m, h, j, y and g, ensuring they are formed correctly with ascenders and descenders.
Our focus in History this week has been thinking about the parts of a castle. We have learnt some new vocabulary, including the words portcullis and moat. This week in maths, we have been thinking about tens and ones when thinking about numbers up to 100. In RE, we have started to think about Stewardship; this links to our whole school catholic social teaching principle. We have been thinking about small changes we can make in school to help look after our planet.
This week in Year 3, Bewilderwood has really started to come to life!
In English, we have been developing character descriptions of Swampy, a Boggle from our Bewilderwood story. The children have been using nouns, adjectives, verbs and expanded noun phrases to make their writing detailed and engaging. It has been wonderful to see them using their imaginations and carefully choosing vocabulary to bring Swampy’s character to life.
In maths, we have been learning how to represent and partition numbers up to 1,000. The children have used Base 10, place-value charts, part-whole models and expanded form to explore the hundreds, tens and ones within each number. They are developing their confidence in explaining the value of each digit and recognising that numbers can be partitioned in different ways.
In art, we have been learning about the famous artist Henri Matisse and exploring his distinctive cut-out style. The children are now using their knowledge of shape, colour and arrangement to create colourful collages of their own Bewilderwood creatures.
In science, we have been learning about plants and the conditions they need to grow successfully. On Monday, the children planted their own beans. Over the coming weeks, we will observe them closely and document their growth and any changes we notice.
In RE, we have been exploring the biblical account of Creation. We have discussed what happened on each day and identified the words and phrases that show God was pleased with all He had made. Our learning about Catholic Social Teaching has also encouraged us to build positive relationships, care for one another and appreciate the wonder of God’s creation.
It has been a creative and purposeful week, with the children showing enthusiasm and making positive connections across their learning.
This week in Year 4, we are starting to work on our non-chronological report about the rainforest. We have explored this type of writing by looking closely at a model text and identifying some of its key features. These include expanded noun phrases, technical vocabulary and interesting facts. We have also researched information to help us develop our own knowledge and create informative, engaging reports.
In maths, we are continuing to strengthen our place value knowledge by looking at numbers up to 10,000. We are building confidence in reading, writing, ordering and understanding the value of each digit in four-digit numbers. The children are working carefully and explaining their mathematical thinking.
In RE, we looked at God’s test to Abraham and discussed how Abraham chose to trust in God when he was given a most difficult choice. We considered how trusting in God might not always be easy, but that it is always the right choice. The children listened thoughtfully, shared their ideas and began to make meaningful connections with their own experiences of trust and decision-making.It has been a focused and purposeful week, with everyone making a positive effort across their learning.
Year 5 have been working hard in Maths, progressing to numbers up to 1,000,000 in our place value learning. We are now beginning to master adding and subtracting these large amounts using formal written methods! We have also continued to enjoy our weekly swimming and Brain Buddies sessions, which are fantastic for supporting both our physical and mental wellbeing. In RE we have linked the Ten Commandments to our own lives. In Science, we have been bringing our learning to life by re-enacting the orbits of the Earth, Sun and Moon, helping us to understand their movements more clearly. Meanwhile, our non-chronological reports about space are receiving their final polished touches, with children checking their vocabulary, presentation and writing carefully so that they are ready to share – including with Dr Maggie!
It has been another busy week of learning in Year 6! In RE, we have continued to explore the idea of Original Sin, giving the children opportunities to reflect on their own lives and the choices we make. In English, we have begun our new setting description, immersing ourselves in what it might have been like to experience the Blitz. The children have been developing their descriptive writing skills, with a particular focus on relative clauses and using ‘show, not tell’ to create atmosphere and engage the reader. In Maths, we are continuing our place value unit, exploring powers of ten and developing our skills when comparing and ordering numbers. Finally, in Theme, we are continuing our journey through World War Two, with a particular focus on the life and experiences of Anne Frank, helping the children to understand the impact of the war on ordinary people.
We’re pleased to let you know that we now have a Kitt Allergy Box available onsite in our dining hall.
The box contains essential items to help support children with allergies in the event of an allergic reaction. It will be kept in the dining hall and will be easily accessible to all staff.
Please be assured that our usual allergy procedures and safeguards remain in place, and staff will continue to follow our established protocols to keep children safe.
