One Kind Word

The whole school has been looking at the PSHCE topic of Anti-Bullying. This year's theme was One Kind Word. This is such an important topic and it shows us how something as simple as a kind word to someone can make such a huge difference.

Here at the Herald, we want to stamp out bullying!

National Cookie Day!

In 1976, Sesame Street included National Cookie Day on its calendar for the first time on November 26th. Then in 1987, Matt Nader of the Blue Chip Cookie Company out of San Francisco created Cookie Day, celebrating it on the 4th December.

This day is now celebrated each year by cookie lovers across the world!

(We love Cookies)

Remember, Remember the 11th November

On Thursday 11th November 2021, the whole country celebrated Remembrance Day, this is a day when we remember the soldiers that died in all the wars. We hold a 2 minutes silence as a sign of respect.

The School Council and head boys and girls went to Central Park in East Ham with lost of other schools for a special service at the cenotaph. The rest of the school gathered on the playground around our special poppy garden in silence to show their respect.

Mademoiselle Giselle

On Friday 5th of November, years 4, 5 and 6 visited the Royal Opera House to watch a ballet called Giselle.

Giselle is a story about a young girl who falls in love with an imposter but realises she loves him for him.

The children that attended reported that there were sad parts of the ballet but overall they enjoyed it. For most children this was the first ballet they have been to. Such a great experience for them.

Thank you to all the teachers that made this amazing trip happen.

Whoopsie Daisy Angel

The story that the pre school, nursery and reception told us was called Whoopsie Daisy Angel. This was about an angel who was really clumsy and was late for every thing. Children loved Whoopsie Daisy Angel because she was so clumsy and made people laugh. Everyone enjoyed the play that they performed to us. It was about the story of Jesus being born but with a little twist that the angel was really funny.

Well done to Pre-school, Nursery and Reception children for putting on a great show!

A Very Special Baby

Year 1 and 2 have been working so hard on their Christmas play and we had the opportunity to watch their wonderful play.

Their play showed the stars telling us the story of Jesus' birth in the stable and how they watched over the shepherds, wise men, Mary and Joseph on that special night.

Everyone enjoyed this play and thought all the children did very well for their first nativity performance. We were impressed by them learning how to say Merry Christmas in different languages.

Well done year 1 and 2!

An Angel, A Star And A Stable

Year 3 and 4 have also worked really hard on their play which tells the nativity story in the form of song and dance. The story is told from the perspective of the people of Bethlehem, they tell us why their town is so famous.

We really enjoyed listening to their catchy songs and how they told us the story of the birth of Jesus.

Well done to years 3 and 4 for all your hard work with your play, those catchy songs will be stuck in our heads for a long time.

The Big Little Nativity

This year's five and six Christmas play showed a storybook that was being read by children about the story behind Christmas and the birth of Jesus.

Teachers and students have commented that the play was extremely funny and enjoyable. Characters such as the talking donkey, dancing wise men and knock knock doors have had everyone laughing.

The children in year 5 and 6 created all the dances themselves and used their own ideas to bring the characters of this nativity to life.

Well done to them all!

Sports News

Girls' Football

It has been a tough season for the girls football team. The girls have been training extremely hard in Mr Hicks' club.

On Wednesday 8th December, the team attended a football competition at Langdon Academy. The girls made it to the quarter finals and unfortunately lost on penalties for their spot in the semi-finals.

They were all disappointed to have missed out on the final, but we are still super proud of them!

Rising Hockey Heroes

St Helen’s hockey team entered their first ever competition and played very well exceeding to 5th place. This was their first competition as a team and they did well against the other Newham schools. They played against St Joachim's, St Luke’s and more. They won most of their games.

They may not have walked away with the trophy, but we have established our hockey team and fun was had by all.

Chess Champions

On the 9th December 2021 our school chess team took part in the London Chess Classic (LCC). It lasted for 6 hours. The LCC is being held at a brand new venue, the Cavendish Conference Centre in Central London. Due to limitations on numbers imposed by COVID, the festival looked a little different this year.

We came first place, with two gold, four silver and one bronze medal. Congratulations to all the chess players, that trained so hard, their efforts paid off!

Get to know...

For this issue we met with the funny and kind, Miss van Biljon.

She made time to speak with us so we could ask her a few questions to get to know her better.

Q: When did you start working at St Helen's?

A: The same year as Ms. Doherty, but I started as a supply teacher and never planned to stay here long. I have now worked here for over 20 years.

Q: What is your favourite thing to do on the weekend and in the school holidays?

A: My favourite thing to do on the weekend is to go camping in my camper van and travel to new and beautiful places around the country.

I also love to sleep!

Q: What is your favourite subject to teach?

A: My favourite subject to teach is Maths, this is because when I was a child at school I didn't understand Maths at all. So now that I do understand it, I love to help children understand too.

Q: What were you like as a child?

A: I was a good student at school, a real angel. It wasn't until I went to University when I became a joker and would prank people.

Q: What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

A: Being Ms. Crump's friend.... JOKING!

Q: What is a quote or mantra that you live by?

Never look down on someone, unless you're helping them up.

Have your say!

Here at The St Helen's Herald, we like to know what you, our readers, think about different aspects of our school, life or current events.

Saint of the Month

Saint Nicholas

As we are approaching Christmas, we though that it would be appropriate to learn a little more about St Nicholas.

Saint Nicholas is the Patron saint of children.

He was thought to be of Greek decent and lived in Myra which is now known as the country Turkey.

When he was only 30 years old he become Bishop of Myra and was known as "The Boy Bishop" due to him being so young. During his time as Bishop, Christians were being prosecuted by the Romans.

He was imprisoned for many years by a Roman emperor until he was released by Emperor Constantine who was the first Christian emperor.

Saint Nicholas was known for his generosity and acts of kindness. He helped 3 poor girls who were going to be sold as slaves by throwing bags of gold through their windows for 3 nights in a row.

Fun Fact

Nicholas means "people's victory" in Greek.
