Welcome to the St Helen's Herald!
Welcome to the first issue of the St Helen's Herald!
We hope you enjoy reading!
The team at the St Helen's Herald just want to say a big hello to all our readers! We are excited for you to read our school newspaper and hope you all become regular readers.
Today is Hello Yellow day! Hopefully you all brought in your ÂŁ1's and wore your bright and yellow clothes.
We are raising money for the Young Minds Charity and they help children to stay mentally healthy by offering support and strategies to help.
For more information on this charity, click the picture to go to the Young Minds website.
Let's have a fun day together and raise lots of money and awareness for this great charity!
Year 6 have been busy nominating and electing the new Head boys and girls for this year.
Our amazing head boys: Renz (6Y), Nathan (6Y) , Breno (6B) and Ian (6B).
Our amazing head girls: Jowita (6Y) , Angy (6Y), Annabella (6B) and Dionne (6B).
Congratulations! We know you will represent us so well!
We also want to say a massive congratulations to all the prefects we know you will be great role models and helpers.
The prefects wear badges so you know who they are. If you need help with anything they may be able to help you.
On Wednesday 29th September 2021, our year 3 and 4 team went to a mixed football competition. They finished second place overall and Mr Hicks (Sports Coach) stated that "We did really well and were unlucky not to bring home the trophy". So out of 10 teams competing, for us to come second is fantastic. We are very proud of our team!
On Wednesday 15th September 2021, the year 2s took part in a Hot Potato competition. We entered two teams into the competition with the school finishing in 1st AND 3rd place. Mr S said "Both teams gave it their all on the day to achieve this fantastic result for the school". We are so proud of our year 2's and we know they will grow up to be great athletes!
At the start of the term in year 6, a new group of sports captains were voted in. These sports captains will be responsible for leading their different houses on sports day as well as organising games at lunch times and helping with sports events.
These captains all wear badges of their house colour, so go to them if you need help with games at lunch time.
For this issue we met with our amazing and hardworking headteacher, Miss Doherty.
She made time to speak with us so we could ask her a few questions to get to know her better.
Q: What are the best and worst experiences you have had as a teacher?
A: The best experiences have to include the Year 6 end of year production, trips to Rome and camping trips. Also, helping children makes me feel good, especially when a child has very little confidence in a subject (like maths), when they end up doing well in their SATs it makes me very proud of them.
My worst experience has to be when I found out the school had to close in lockdown! I was so sad to be away from the school and the children for so long. Also, my bad experience has to be when children misbehave or are unkind to each other as this makes me very upset.
Q: Do you have any fears or phobias?
A: YES! I am very scared of spiders, creepy crawlies and mice!
Q: What would be your dream vacation?
A: My dream vacation would have to be anywhere that I could go with my whole family and my friends together. I love going on caravan holidays but I don't mind where I go. If I could save enough money, I would love to take all my family to Disneyland Paris.
Q: What was your first day at St Helen's like?
A: I joined St Helens in the year 2000, so I have worked here for 21 years! At first I felt a bit lost and did not know what to do. On my first day as Headteacher of St Helen's I also felt a bit scared and lost, but after my first assembly with all the children I knew what to do.
Q: What inspired you to become a teacher?
A: Miss Swan, my teacher when I was a child at St Helen's inspired me, she was so kind and caring that I knew I wanted to grow up and be just like her.
Here at The St Helen's Herald, we like to know what you, our readers, think about different aspects of our school, life or current events.
This issue we want to know what school lunch is your absolute favourite!
We have all been starting our Black History topics in school and have been really enjoying learning about lots of interesting people who migrated from different parts of the world.
Coming up soon we will have our assemblies where we will get to share with one another a poetry performance related to our topics. Can't wait to see all of your performances!
This has been a busy half term and at 3:20pm on Friday 22nd October we finish school and have A WHOLE WEEK OFF SCHOOL!
We hope you will all have lots of fun with friends and your families and we can't wait to hear about your break when we return to school on Monday 1st November!
As it is our first issue of the St Helen's Herald, we thought that the best saint to start off our SOTM (Saint of the month) column is Saint Helen herself.
Saint Helen was born in the year 250 and was Queen of a place called Bythnia which is now known as the country Turkey. She would often use her money to help the sick and needy.
She was a Christian and moved to Rome. When she was almost 80 years old she went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to visit the place where Jesus died. While she was there she helped to discover the cross that Jesus had died on.
The cross was found on Mount Calvary and a magnificent church was built there called, the Church of the Resurrection. Part of the cross was sent to Rome and the rest stayed in Jerusalem.
We celebrate Saint Helen's feast day on the 18th August.
