My name is Lisa Wilhelm. This is my sixth year teaching in the Stewartville School District and my third year at BCI. I am originally from Lanesboro, and graduated from Winona State University in the mid 1980's with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education. I have been teaching ever since then (30 years so far). For eighteen of those years I taught K-12 Art with the last twelve being at Fillmore Central Elementary and former Middle School in Preston. While managing an inclusive visual arts classroom, I discovered that many of my most rewarding teaching experiences were with students with special needs.
In 2006, after attaining K-12 Graduate Licensure in Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) at WSU, I resigned my art position at Fillmore Central to accept a K-12 Special Education assignment at a charter school in Winona. I returned to Fillmore Central the next year as the lead high school special education teacher. While at FCHS, I attended Augsburg College to become certified in Emotional or Behavioral Disorders (EBD).
With my three children graduated from Fillmore Central and in my own quest to keep moving forward, I accepted a position at Stewartville Middle School in 2014. This allowed my husband Michael and me to move to Rochester where he has been employed since 1990. Not only did this shorten his commute, but also brought us closer to our adult children.
Presently, Mike and I have five grandchildren with the oldest being a handsome 11-year-old boy with non-verbal autism. He has not only brought our whole family great joy, but has also increased my understanding of the challenges students with disabilities and their parents and siblings face on a daily basis.
Family and Education are my two greatest passions, and I am looking forward to working with students, parents, and the whole BCI family to make 2018-2019 the best school year yet!
