"Zip Phrases" are common sayings used in oral and written language. The phrases incorporate sight words our students need to master to become strong readers and writers. Some phrases are complete sentences and others are sentence fragments.
Start with the first set and grow from there! There are 100 phrases in each set. Begin with 5 or 10 phrases at a time.
First, practice reading the words individually. This is developmentally appropriate. Make note of the words your child has difficulty with and practice phrases with those card more frequently.
Next, practice reading the phrase slowly outloud to your child while connecting the words together. Have them repeat the phrase back to you.
Finally, over time as your child becomes more comfortable reading the phrases have them practice independently reading them outloud.
Reading aloud is essential for several reasons. I tell the kids, "YOU NEED TO GIVE YOUR BRAIN MORE INFORMATION." By reading the phrases aloud, your child is not only SEEING and THINKING about the words - they're also SAYING the words so their mouth knows that they FEEL like and their ears know what the SOUND like. Encourage your child to give their brain all the information they can in any areas of study to promote long term memorization and fluent reading.
