Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How long will we do this online learning?

A1. According to Govenor Newsom, all CA schools will do online learning for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. At this time, all SRVUSD summer school remedial and advancement programs are paused. There no is word yet about the upcoming school year starting this Fall 2020.

Q2. What is going on with tests and finals for this semester?

A2. We have not heard back from administrators or SRVUSD about final exams, but for now, we will offer Quizizz and Google Form Check Ins to assess your learning each week. We initially planned for an exam and project for the end of the spring semester. Now, it looks like we will keep the project, but modify it for solo submission, instead of group or partner. Class assignments will be updated on School Loop. For future Quizizz and Google Forms, you will be able to see the correct answers following submission for feedback.

Q3. Will we have required Google Meets?

A3. Based on how the SRVUSD is emphasizing flexible learning, I do not see any Google Meets as mandatory. According to SRVUSD, "Providing a flexible schedule is in keeping with the practices of almost all the Bay Area and high performing school districts and takes into account that student and family lives are all very different right now. A flexible schedule provides equal opportunity for all students to access the curriculum at times that work for each unique family situation. Teaching online will look very different than face-to-face instruction in order to be effective. Online instruction should not consist of the “sit and get” or lecture-style model that some teachers use. Instead, putting the onus on the student to engage in the material in deep and creative ways is strongly encouraged in the online format."

Q4. Why Google Meet? Can we have more Meets?

A4. Our district offers technical support for all Google Apps, so they recommend Google in case issues arise. Now in Phase 2, we are only offering office hours by department so it does not conflict with any other class. Science is just Tuesdays 1:45-3:15 and Fridays 10:00-11:30. If you want to come by and chat with your classmates, text/email them to go to office hours!

Q5. How can I manage my time with family, friends, and school work?

A5. Try making a schedule for yourself. Now that classes are online, there should be less work than before. The Biology teachers and I have planned assignments so you only need 30 minutes a day for Biology, or about 2.5 hours a week. All of your teachers will post the week's assignments by Monday at 9AM, so you can spend Monday planning out your week. Maybe after you finish a subject, take a break with family (go on a safe walk around the neighborhood), or check in with a friend!

Q6. How can I learn everything properly online?

A6. Please do not stress about trying to learn the same amount as when we were in school normally. Our world is upside down right now. You might feel ready to tackle new information, but that pressure would stress out too many other people. All teachers will understand next year that there will be some information or skills that their students did not get a chance to practice. My personal idea is that this remote learning opportunity is for you to practice skills enough so you don't lose it all by the time we go back. Take this time to spend with your family! Learn a new skill? Mom/dad's secret recipe? Grow a plant from seed?
