Welcome to Academic Enrichment/ELD Class at Monte Vista.
This elective course is designed to provide opportunities for emerging to almost proficient multilingual students to connect with their peers, teachers, and resources on campus to support their academic, social, and English language development. Academic Enrichment/English Learner Development Class is an elective class that is part of the student’s regular schedule, and students are given a letter grade at the end of each semester.
Together, we will focus on reading comprehension, speaking fluency, and writing with an emphasis on academic language by working on language structure and vocabulary. We will also review more complex concepts presented in students' regular classes through a linguistic lens to increase concept understanding and knowledge retention. In class work will include targeted exercises, group practices such as reading out loud authentic articles, writing poetry and/or listening to cool music. We might even have a friendly contest or two!
Most assignments and work will be completed in students' workbooks but we will also use digital educational platforms such as Google Classroom, Formative, Newsela, Lexia, and more. But don't worry, we will work hard and we will play hard. We will also use Kahoot, Blooket or other game-oriented platforms to practice our skills and assess our learning.
Let's this year begin and work on being Exemplary Learners.
CURRICULUM
This Academic Enrichment/English Learner Development Class is exploring the following district-approved curriculum:
Read 180 is an online program that supports language. It is excellent for some of the foundational word work skills, sentence development, and reading that many language learners need to succeed. Students can access it through their classlink portal.
English 3D, which builds on multilingual learners' existing linguistic strengths and accelerate English proficiency in grades K–12. English 3D® is an explicit and interactive English Language Development curriculum designed by Dr. Kate Kinsella.
These courses:

Students learn and practice using a scaffolded set of increasingly sophisticated academic language functions across each issue.
Students classified as "emerging" on the California's ELPAC test will use Language Launch 2. Each
Students will develop skills in critical thinking and problem solving
