This course is aligned with SRVUSD’s homework policy and regulations (BP 6154 / AR 6154).
Homework can include practicing a skill or process that students can do independently but not fluently, elaborating on information that has been addressed in class to deepen students’ knowledge, providing opportunities for students to explore topics of their own interest, and recorded reading.
● No more than 2 hours of homework per course per week and no more than 30 minutes per night per course will be assigned. I do not give homework on weekends as I believe you should spend time as a family or review the material we saw during the week
● Some portions of projects may be assigned as homework.
● No homework, including long term projects, will be assigned during school recesses.
● Long-term assignments and projects will be clearly defined and planned over several weeks. Tests will be announced at least one week prior to the day of the test.
● SRVUSD’s homework policy and regulations emphasize that students, staff and parents should take an active role regarding homework including communication between students and faculty when homework becomes overwhelming and parents contacting teachers if their child consistently cannot keep up with the homework.

In this class, most assessments should be made up, from formative assessments like homework to summative unit tests or projects. The time and day at which missed assessments will be made up will need to be pre-arranged with me as I travel to another school right after teaching at Monte Vista. There will be no opportunity to make up projects, especially if group work is involved. The student's lack of or limited work on missed projects will be taken into account in their final grade. Please note that work and tests turned in late, even if they are for an excused absence, may be corrected and/or graded later than those turned in with the rest of the class. To keep your grade current, do everything you can to turn in work on time.
For missing or late homework
- Late homework will only be accepted until the end of the week for which it was assigned. For example: Work assigned for Wednesday or Friday will be marked as missing if it is not submitted by Sunday midnight.
- Late penalty will apply if work is submitted before Sunday midnight. Work submitted after the end of the week will result in a missing assignment and thus show as a zero which will not be updated to "late work grading" for the rest of the semester.
For excused absences:
Students who miss school work because of an excused absence shall be given the opportunity to complete all assignments and tests that can be reasonably provided. As determined by the teacher, the assignments and tests shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the assignments and tests missed during the absence. Students shall receive full credit for work satisfactorily completed within a reasonable period of time (BP 6154). I allow one day of make up time per absent day, which means that since we are on a block schedule, students will have until the following class to make up assignments due on the day they were absent. It is the student's responsibility to find out what they missed and to inform me that homework has been updated.
No student may have his/her grade reduced or lose academic credit for any excused absence when missed assignments and tests are satisfactorily completed within a reasonable period of time (AR 6154).
For unexcused absences:
Students who miss school work because of unexcused absences may be given the opportunity to make up missed work for full or reduced credit. Teachers shall assign such makeup work as necessary to ensure academic progress, not as a punitive measure (BP 6154). If the assignment is corrected in class, the student will no longer have an opportunity to make up that work. Otherwise students will have an opportunity to submit missed assignments according to the excused absence policy.
When students miss school work because of suspensions, the Board expects that teachers shall give students the opportunity to make up missed work. Teachers shall assign such makeup work as necessary to ensure academic progress, not as a punitive measure (BP 6154).
If a student misses class without an excuse and does not subsequently turn in homework, take a test, or fulfill another class requirement which he/she missed, the teacher may lower the student's grade for nonperformance (BP 5121). Missing assignments will result in a zero on the grade book.
I reserve the right to update and review this Course Policy and Procedures as needed.
