Class Descriptions
Composition and Literature: Through the rich literature strands of Alveary, the 5th-6th and 7th-8th grades will follow the General Literature recommendations, covering one book a term, reading together in class and participating in both oral and written narrations while learning to self-edit and improve fluent writing skills. The emphasis will be encouraging a love of reading rich literature together, hearing the students’ opinions on the books, and providing a welcoming environment to share their written words showing that what they say matters.
6th Grade Math: Children will review basic arithmetic, multiplication, division and fractions. Decimals and percentages will be introduced. Books and Supplies
PreAlgebra: Children will learn about negatives, variables, solving for the unknown and other skills needed to prepare them for Algebra 1.
Natural History: Students learn about oceanography, predator-prey relationships and the impact of polluction as they consider man’s stewardship of the natural work.
Government: Students spend a term learning the structure of our local and state government then turn to key primary source documents related to our government before ending the year with an introduction to economics.
Architecture: Students study architecture from the time period 1650-1800 AD. This helps students visualize what life was like for people in the past and how they went about their daily lives.
