APRIL AND MAY Topics

7th Grade:

Tone, Balance, and Blend: Performing with a clear quality tone, and in a way that listeners are able to hear all parts equally.

Active Listening: Listening to and assessing the performance of myself, small groups, and others.

Marching Techniques: Learn about correct marching technique and techniques for music memorization.


8th Grade:

  • Advance Musicianship: Performing dynamics (volume) and articulations (the length and style of notes) to a high level, and in an appropriate style (dance vs. lyrical).
  • Advanced Techniques: Expanding ranges (high and low notes), and rhythmic vocabulary.
  • Marching Techniques: Learn about correct marching technique and techniques for music memorization.


Practice Makes progress!

Practice at least 60 minutes each week to ensure individual success in band!

Student GOALS

What parents can do:

The SMS band has four main goals:

  1. Help students become proficient on their instrument
  2. Become an independent musician
  3. Develop responsibility, communication, and organizational skills
  4. Create a supportive, safe, and welcoming community for all


  1. Help your child set up and stick to a regular practice schedule (at least 60 minutes a week over two or three days)
  2. Encourage your child to practice with a goal in mind
  3. Emphasize commitment to the success of the whole ensemble in addition to individual success

Online Metronome This metronome is available online for free and can be used from any device.

Online Tuner This tuner will help you set your instrument in tune at the beginning of your practice session.

Online Voice Recorder is the preferred method for submitting practice recordings, and is also helpful for self-assessment. Works with any device with a microphone.

JW Pepper has recordings of almost every band song imaginable.

Other Tuners and metronomes are available for download on the Apple App store or GooglePlay for Android.
