Springfield Public Schools Summer Professional Learning

Optional learning sessions will occur during June, July, and August. Sessions will focus on curriculum and instruction, CPI, Social Emotional and Cognitive Learning, and Community Engagement! Participants are paid $17.50 per hour for learning for most sessions. Click the blue button to the right to register for the sessions unless it is noted below not to use Employee Self Service.

Active Classrooms

In this session, you will learn why movement is a key component of learning and how to incorporate functional movement in the traditional and virtual classroom without losing instructional minutes. You will leave with confidence, teacher friendly strategies, resources and skills to create an Active Classroom to maximize learning and engagement for ALL students while supporting their health. K-5 Math Progressions

These sessions will support teachers in making instructional decisions about purposeful questions, scaffolds, and the connection to facilitating student discourse in the classroom by engaging in learning and conversations tied directly to progressions of math concepts. This learning will directly support usage of the 5 practices for orchestrating discourse when implementing the IM curriculum. (Limit of 20 participants) . Location to be announced. K-5 Phonics, Spelling, & Word Study

The Fountas & Pinnell Phonics, Spelling, and Word Study System is a collection of one hundred brief lessons. Participants will learn to utilize the resources to plan whole group, small group, and independent sound, letter, and word work activities. This will take place virtually. K-5 Raz-Plus

Participants will learn to utilize Reading A-Z and RAZ Kids. Teachers will learn how to use lesson plans to plan instruction, how to create and manage assignments, and ways to use student data to group students for reading instruction. Math Mini-Conference

This day-long event will offer six sessions by expert presenters on math topics focused on equitable instructional practices including: productive struggle, fluency, strengths based assessment and many more! Presenters include: Jennifer Bay-Williams, John SanGiovanni, Robert Berry, Beth Kobett, Patrick Sullivan, Karen Karp, Sara Bush, Peg Smith. This will take place virtually. Project-Based Learning: PBL 101

This session is optional training for teachers who are new to the district or are new to project-based learning. PBL is a teaching method designed to make learning more engaging, relevant and personal. This session will provide you with the tools and information you need to successfully implement the SPS Project-Based Learning curriculum in your classroom. This will take place asynchronously. Springfield Regional Arts Integration Conference

The Springfield Regional Arts Integration Conference brings together educators in southwest Missouri to learn about arts integration strategies for classroom implementation. Utilizing “Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts” teaching artists and educators from the Springfield region, you will learn more about the role arts integration can play in both arts and core classroom settings. (Limit of 60-75 participants) . This will take place at Kickapoo High School. Point of contact: Breana Kavanaugh. ($17.50/hour)

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid for Adults Assisting Youth (YMHFA) is a public education program which introduces participants to unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and most importantly – teaches individuals how to help a youth in crisis or experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. Cognitive Coaching Part I (Days 1-4)

Community Engagement

SPS Access Class

This unique learning opportunity enhances community awareness, builds meaningful connections with other SPS teachers and community networks, increases knowledge of community resources available to support SPS students and families and raises consciousness of future opportunities available to SPS students after graduation. This will take place seated at a location in the community. Point of contact: Martha Doennig (no hourly pay as the district covers your registration for this Leadership Springfield event)
