Grading Policy

Grading policy is based on the guidelines set by National Physical Education Standards (NASPE) and the New York State Physical Education Learning Standards. The guidelines are as follows:

    • Competency in motor skills and movement patterns.

    • Understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics.

    • Participates regularly in physical activity.

    • Achieves/maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

    • Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior.

    • Values physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

    • Students will have the necessary knowledge and skills to establish and maintain physical fitness, participate in physical activity, and maintain personal health.

    • Students will acquire the knowledge and ability necessary to create and maintain a safe and healthy environment.

    • Students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources.


Daily Rubric:

2 – Performs at a high level for the duration of the activity

    • Demonstrates and successfully executes all required skills to complete the activity.

    • Evidence of a well thought out strategy is clearly demonstrated during the activity.

    • Recognizes his/her capabilities and limitations as well as those of others and assumes a supportive or leadership role as the situation may dictate.

    • Demonstrates an excellent understanding and knowledge of the rules.

    • Demonstrates personal and social responsibility in physical activity settings at all times.

    • Executes all required PE procedures with little or no prompting.

1 – Performs at a minimal level for the duration of the activity.

    • Rarely demonstrates or successfully executes some of the required skills of the activity.

    • Evidence of a strategy is rarely demonstrated during the activity.

    • Rarely recognizes his/her capabilities and limitations as well as those of others and does not assume supportive or leadership role as the situation may dictate.

    • Demonstrates a poor or lack of understanding and knowledge of the rules.

    • Rarely demonstrates personal and social responsibility in physical activity settings.

    • Executes few of the required PE procedures and frequently needs repeated prompting.

0 – Does not perform or is absent from class.

Does not follow safety standards set for class.


*A student who does not participate will have the opportunity to earn up to 100% of the daily participation points during a pre-scheduled make-up class with his or her teacher.


*It is the responsibility of the student to complete any missed work or to obtain any materials from his or her teacher when absent. Failure to do so in a timely manner could result in a 0 for the assignment.

Absences

Students will be permitted one absence from class per quarter that will not impact his or her grade at the end of the quarter.

    • Any absence will result in a 0 for the day. At the end of every marking period (quarter), the lowest grade will be dropped from each students' daily grade. Students will be given an opportunity to complete a make-up class for full credit. Students should make arrangements with his or her teacher to complete the make-up. Students may need to stay after school to do so.
