Everyone at Springfield is very much getting back into the swing of things as the third term has got underway. This term, further adjustments were made to the timetables of the Grade 8s and 9s, all the while keeping the issue of their safety on campus paramount while offering them the best teaching experience possible under the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Grade 10s and 11s continue with all of their subjects, much as they did during the second term with the opportunity of attending classes on certain days of the week added, while the Grade 12s are working with the focus of completing the curriculum for the year and preparing for their trial exams at the end of the term.
Something that is a little different this term is that there will be more formal assessments this term. Within the different subject areas, a variety of assessment forms may be covered. You daughter’s subject teachers will specify the requirements of each particular task ahead of the date on which it will be completed.
For the Grade 12s, there are tests scheduled for the consolidation days as well as in the lesson times of particular subjects as well as the trial exams. Pupils in Grades 8 - 11 will find that assessments and projects will be handled during their lesson times. A test timetable has been drawn up for the staff to follow to ensure that, as far as possible, the tasks are spread evenly across the five days of the teaching cycle in any particular grade.
Pupils who have opted to not to return to school due to comorbidities or self-isolation may complete the assessment under supervision at home. Pupils who will not be at school for an assessment need to inform their subject teacher ahead of time so that arrangements can be made for the assessment to be completed at home. In these cases, a copy of the Remote Assessment Declaration must be completed and returned with the assessment, which should be scanned and returned to the school when it has been completed. On this document, a responsible adult must declare that the assessment was completed solely by the pupil and that the conditions outlined in the assessment such as time or the use of equipment, books or source material have been adhered to.
Many assessments will be completed using a digital platform, but some tasks may involve paper.
In order to minimise any risk of transmission, strict controls are in place with regards to the printing, handing out, collection, marking and returning of written scripts. At times, pupils may need to complete or submit electronic copies of their written scripts. In these cases, pupils must still, however, retain the hard copy of any documents submitted in case they are required by the WCED later in the year.
If you or your daughter are unsure about the specifics of any particular subject’s assessment requirements, please make contact with the relevant subject teacher who will be able to clarify any queries you might have.
For the Grade 9s, the subject choice information is coming together well and information will be communicated to pupils and parents about this process over the next two days. Plans include input from Ms Mullan, myself and an industrial psychologist, as well as a range of videos and interactive features on our Intranet for the pupils to use. There will also be an opportunity for a question and answer session or individual consultations for those who have any queries about the subjects in the senior grades or the process in general.
Until the next newsletter, stay warm - and stay safe!

Springfield will be hosting a blood donation clinic on Tuesday, 28th July. The clinic will be held from 10.00am-2.30pm in St Catherine's Hall (next to the Nursery campus). The Western Cape Blood Service desperately needs donations, particularly as flu and COVID infections have reduced the number of potential donors. In order to limit the number of people in the hall and to comply with COVID safety regulations, donors must sign up for a time slot in which they will donate. The sign-up form will be sent out shortly. All medically fit donors who are over the age of 16, weigh 50kg or more and who have eaten breakfast on the day of donation are welcome to donate. For further information on donation, please see https://www.wcbs.org.za/. Be a hero in forty minutes: your pint of blood will save three lives!
Luhlanganiso Majebe donating blood at the last Springfield Blood Clinic. How we donate will change (wear a mask!) but the need remains the same.
This week, from Monday to Friday, we will be collecting goods to donate towards the Health Foundation who will distribute it amongst COVID patients at various health facilities. To read up more about this you can go to this website: https://www.capetownetc.com/cape-town/send-a-care-package-for-covid-patients-on-mandela-day/
The items we are looking for are fleece blankets, socks, toiletries, warm clothing and face masks. Please also include a handmade get well card and put it in a sealed bag with the donated goods. Please ensure that the donated goods are new and place them in the Outreach donation box which will be placed in the screening room. You may decide to donate all of or some of the goods - anything will help!
We will send out another email next week Monday with other Community Engagement ideas that you could consider getting involved with for the term but would like to focus on this project in honour of Mandela Day this week.
Ps. please don't throw away any coffee jars or plastic containers - we have a project coming up that we will need them for and will send more information through next week.
Patients at Ceres Hospital wearing donated masks.
Security guards at Ceres Hospital wearing donated masks.
Support staff at Ceres Hospital wearing a donated mask.
Thanks to the members of the wider Springfield Community, over 400 face masks have been donated to Ceres Hospital, which is dealing with a huge number of patients infected with COVID and TB. Many of these patients arrive at the hospital without suitable masks. Matron Tilly Kunz has been able to distribute masks to these patients and support staff, which means that surgical masks (which are in short supply) can be reserved for medical staff. Grateful thanks to Mr and Mrs Gold and the Ciovita cycling company, Mrs Lyn Bosanquet, Mrs Moira Lineker, Kenton CAN, Mrs Nic Stephens and Pinelands CAN and the anonymous donors who have donated so generously. Further donations can be dropped with the security guards at the Springfield gate on Convent Road. Mrs Kunz needs approximately 150 masks per week for distribution, and any extra masks will be donated to Groote Schuur Hospital, so all donations are gratefully received.

Despite the lockdown, our girls are as keen as always to continue with any extramural activities they can. As such, the Debating Society has been working tirelessly to begin with Social Debating for our Grade 8-10s as soon as possible. As there is still uncertainty surrounding the timetable and term dates, we would initially like to see how many girls would be interested in participating in Social Debating. These sessions will occur on an online platform, and we have fantastic coaches and heads of the society that will be running the sessions. These sessions will run as follows:
Wednesdays 14:00-15:00.
There will be sessions where content and debating techniques will be discussed and taught, as well as sessions where the girls will be able to submit speeches that they will receive feedback on. These sessions will alternate from week to week.
We will start by using WhatsApp as a platform for communication, so we ask that your daughter have access to a device where WhatsApp can be accessed.
For larger group discussions and virtual debates, we will use Google Hangouts.
There is a fee associated with joining debating of R240,00. This is the payment that will cover debating until the end of Term 3, and this will be deducted from your account.
If your daughter is interested in joining Team or Social Debating, please complete the following form. If you have already filled in the form there is no need to fill it in again. Please note, that even if your daughter is part of Team/Social debating this form still needs to please be completed. Participation in online debating will count towards Cultural Awards.
