Hi Everyone! I am the 6th Grade Math teacher for team Tsunami at Springfield Middle School. This is my 9th year teaching middle school math, and my 2nd year at Springfield Middle School. I graduated from the University of Toledo in 2015 with my Bachelors of Education- Middle School Math and Science.
I have been happily married to my husband, Michael for 8 years and we have 2 beautiful girls, Olivia (5) and Mackenzie (3). We also have 1 dog, Zoey and 1 cat, Gibby. They keep us very busy!
I am really looking forward to this new school year, and to meet all of the new students and families.
Go Blue Devils!

Statistical Measure and Displays
Integers
How I teach:
As a teacher and a mom, I know that all kids learn differently. I try to teach using different techniques to help all students learn the best way they can. Whether it's taking notes, practicing up on the board, using different manipulatives, watching videos, or relating it to real life, your student will have plenty of opportunities to learn and practice their math skills. As I repeatedly tell my students, in order to learn math, you must do math.
Please encourage your child to take notes, participate, and do the classwork.
Homework:
Students will have a weekly homework assignment online. It will be assigned every Monday and due the following Monday. The weekly homework assignment will be on Edulastic. It will contain 10 questions of concepts that we have previously learned to hopefully prevent students from learning and forgetting as soon as they take the test.
To get on Edulastic:
Students will go to edulastic.com and sign in with google
OR
Log on to clever, click on my page (J. Thomas) and click on the edulastic link.
It will be labeled Math Weekly Review #
Grading Scale:
At Springfield Middle School, the entire math department has the following grading scale:
10% Classwork/Assignments
90% Tests and Quizzes
With this grading scale, it is absolutely crucial that your child studies for the tests. The day before every test, we will be doing a class study guide. The study guide is very similar to the test (just different numbers). They will be encouraged to bring it home and use it to study. I will also have all the notes we did in class posted on Google Classroom.
Test Retakes:
It is always my goal to have the tests graded and passed back to the students the day after the test was taken. They will be given time in class to correct any wrong answers and receive up to half credit for each corrected answer.
