You will need a copy of your college transcript to begin determining if you are eligible for a provisional teaching license in Virginia. A provisional teaching license will allow you to teach (if hired) for up to three years while completing the remaining requirements for a full teaching license. If hired in SCPS, our licensure coordinator will assist you in submitting the needed documentation to the Virginia Department of Education for the provisional license.
After reviewing the information below, if you believe that you have met the requirements, please email a copy of your transcripts to our licensure coordinator, Holly Richards at hrichards@spotsylvania.k12.va.us. She will reach out to you after verifying your transcript with VDOE requirements.
Please note:
A provisional license cannot be obtained unless you are hired with our school division.
If you have not completed the Praxis, you will need to take test code 5001 (Elementary Education Multiple Subjects).
The candidate for the elementary education preK-6 endorsement shall have earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university majoring in the liberal arts or sciences (or equivalent) and meet the following semester-hour requirements:
English: 6 semester hours + pass Praxis
Mathematics: 6 hours in mathematics and complete a methods in teaching elementary mathematics course (3 semester hours) + pass Praxis
Laboratory Sciences: 9 semester hours (in two science disciplines), complete a methods in teaching elementary science course (3 semester hours),+ pass Praxis
History: 3 semester hours in history, complete 3 semester hours in social science (geography or economics), complete a methods in teaching elementary history and social sciences course (3 semester hours) + pass Praxis
Arts: 3 semester hours
