With spring approaching, pollen and other allergens may affect children with allergies and asthma. To help keep your child safe and comfortable, please follow these steps:
1. Provide allergy medication
If your child needs allergy medication during the school day (e.g., Zyrtec, Claratyne), please provide it to the school along with the St Peter’s Medication Authority Form attached to this notice, or an Allergy Action Plan from your paediatrician if the allergy is ASCIA-documented.
2. Provide asthma medication
If your child has asthma, please provide all prescribed asthma medications (e.g., Ventolin inhalers, preventers) that are up to date.
Deliver these to the school nurse at the school office.
(Ventolin inhalers will be given to your child’s teacher to keep in the classroom.)
3. Provide updated Action Plans
Please review your child’s current Asthma or Allergy Action Plan.
If it is close to expiring or has been updated recently, provide the latest copy to the school nurse at the school office.
4. Complete medication forms and label medications
For mild seasonal allergy medications given as needed (e.g., hay fever), only a parent signature on the attached Medication Authority Form is required. No doctor’s signature is needed.
For known allergies or asthma assessed by a paediatrician, an Allergy or Asthma Action Plan signed by a doctor is required, and the appropriate medication must be provided.
All medications must be clearly labelled with your child’s full name and dosage instructions.
Thunderstorm asthma
Thunderstorm asthma can affect people with asthma or hay fever, especially during pollen season. If your child has asthma or allergies, please ensure they have their medication or puffer at school each day, and that the school has an up-to-date action plan. We also encourage families to stay alert to weather warnings as we move into the spring and summer seasons where thunderstorm asthma primarily occurs.
