Information on this webpage reflects the Sept. 17 bond proposal. Voter rejection of that plan left the Board of Education to consider a revised referendum as described on this website’s home page. Information on this webpage will be updated as that new plan is developed.
Like any space used daily, we need to invest in the infrastructure and systems that keep things running smoothly. A referendum would finance large-scale infrastructure projects, like how a homeowner uses a loan to pay for home improvements and brings the added benefit of state aid to cover a portion of the project costs.
When the 3.88 acre property and 35,000-square-foot building at 330 South Avenue in Fanwood came on the market, SPF saw the potential to alleviate the district’s current overcrowding and prepare for future population growth. Question 1 on the ballot would fund the purchase, renovation, and expansion of the building. The expansion would add an additional 50,000 square feet to the school.
By the 2027-28 school year, La Grande Elementary School would serve as a space for students in pre-K through fifth grade who live in Scotch Plains and Fanwood in that vicinity.
Neighborhood Schools
If the referendum passes, La Grande Elementary School would open at the start of the 2027-28 school year. This would coincide with fifth grade students moving to elementary schools and would redistribute which students attend each of the six elementary schools. This would be based on the population density around a school and how close the student lives to the school. These neighborhood schools would provide a sense of belonging and community and ease space issues in the elementary and middle schools.
We don't yet know which students will attend each school because the population density could change over the next three years. We are, however, committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for students and their families. We would use the three-year window of time to plan, inform the parents, students and staff who will be impacted, and ensure we have the appropriate services in place to support students through this transition.
