Property Tax Levy Components

The total property tax levy is comprised of several individual levies. These include:

  1. General Fund
    • Money generated is used to fund departments within the General Fund (Police, Fire, Parks, Library, etc.)
    • Levy is capped at $8.10 / $1,000 of valuation
  2. Tort Liability
    • Money generated is used to pay portion of the Property and Liability Insurance Premiums for the General Fund Department
    • There is no cap on this levy, the City can levy the amount necessary to generate the dollars needed
  3. Police/Fire Retirement
    • This levy is used to pay the City's contribution for the Police and Fire Retirement System
    • There is no cap on this levey, the City can levy the amount necessary to generate the dollars needed
  4. Other employee Benefits
    • This levy is used to pay for the City's contribution of Health Insurance, Worker's Compensation premiums, Unemployment Insurance premiums that are attributable to General Fund Departments. Business Type Activity departments will pay their portion from their revenues
    • There is no cap on this levy, the City can levy the amount necessary to generate the dollars needed
  5. Debt Service
    • This levy is used to pay principal and interest payments on General Obligation debt that is not paid for by another source of revenue
    • There is no cap on this levy, the City can levy the amount necessary to generate the dollars needed
