Max married Rose McDougal and had one daughter, Sandy, who married Larne Wright. Sandy and Larne have two sons and reside in Muskegon.  

Max attended Western State Teachers College, and played football one year. He was elected to the Student Senate while at college. Max was a partner in Wolbrink's Sephyr Service. 

During World War II, Max served in the Army Air Force. While in the armed forces, he won the Distinguished Flying Cross with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.
