These statistics were gathered from Jim's former classmates, who described him as a super athlete during his high school and college years. Since 1939 was in the midst of the Depression and money was tight, no class yearbook was published.
After two years at Grand Rapids Junior College, Jim attended on year at Michigan State University before joining the Naval Air Corps in 1942 and going to war. Jim loved flying and made plans to become a commercial pilot upon his return from active duty.
Jim died December 23, 1943, in a Japanese prison camp on the island of Rabaul. He had been shot down six months prior to his death and was wounded at that time. He was described by a fellow prisoner as being kind, good, meek, and loveable during his imprisonment. James Warren died in the arms of a fellow prisoner of sickness and malnutrition.
As a result of the exemplary person Jim was, the James Warren Athletic Award was established in 1960 by his classmate Dean C. Bradford (Class of 1939). This award is still the highest athletic honor awarded each year to a graduating senior male athlete. The award is presented annually to the male senior who exemplifies athletic ability, strong leadership, good sportsmanship, and a positive attitude. 1994 signifies 34 years of recognition through the James Warren Award.
