"Behind-the-Wheel" instruction is offered to all students who have successfully completed the "Classroom" phase of the program. The State Curriculum requires a minimum six hours driving. It is optional and the responsibility of the parent/student to register for the program. Lessons are offered during the school day. All lessons are offered by class block/period in which the student drives only during the block/period they have selected on their on-the-road permission form. Five hours are during the school day, one hour is required to be driven after dark.
Registration requires completion of a On-the-road driving registration form (Green Form) with parent and student signatures.
Lessons will be scheduled by staff for day time (only during the school year) lessons.
7 daytime lessons that will be 40 minutes of driving and one night time lesson of 60 minutes. You will be responsible for making up any class work that you missed, communicating with your teacher about your absence due to driving. We schedule lessons throughout your 6 months of your permit process so we recommend selecting all blocks since we cannot control the odd or even schedule that far in advance. This also helps only missed a few subjects once instead one or two subjects multiple times.
Students must schedule with staff for night and summer lessons. Email or in-person.
Summer session/Night lessons: Use the spartandoc calendar to view any open driving sessions. Openings will be show in 2 hour slots with initials SS, BD, or AG and are filled once 3 students are assigned to this block/session. Night lessons can only have two students assigned to a session. This summer night lessons are the 9-11pm slots. To view the calendar use the following link: https://calendar.google.com/calendar/render?tab=oc#main_7
Email all three instructors (Schrader, Ditchcreek, and Green) and asked to be scheduled in any openings you find.
If the calendar link did not work just go onto spartandocs. In the top right corner are apps. Click Calendar. Make sure on the left hand side "Driver Ed DT" calendar is highlighted.
Three missed driving lessons will result in removal from the program. Students are encouraged to share their spartandocs with parents. This will allow parents to be aware of driving dates, progress, and driving habits that need work.
Students must complete all 6 hours of driving with the district before taking their license exam.
Students must bring the following items to their license exam:
Permit
65 hour Driving Log
Parent or Guardian to sign Parent license consent form (State) or have form stamped by notary prior to test.
Once again...Upon completion of the "Behind-the-Wheel" and "Classroom" programs students are eligible to test for their Pennsylvania State Junior Drivers License with the Southern Lehigh Instructor. All State requirements apply for age/date/log time etc.
Here are some other helpful tips/reminders for driving lessons:
Bring your actual permit with you for your lesson (a copy or picture of the permit does NOT count)
Go the Physical Education Office at the start of the block that you are scheduled to drive
You do not need to check in with your classroom teacher at the start of the block since they receive an email with who is driving but it is helpful to reach out to that teacher in advance to let them know and get your missing work
Block 3 Driving Lessons will eat Lunch 4 so report to the PE Office at the beginning on Block 3 (unless notified otherwise)
Cancel lessons in advance if you know you will be absent and try to let us know if you are not in school if possible
Nighttime lessons are NOT scheduled for you. You will have to do this yourself by emailing an instructor of an open evening slot that says BD, SS, or AG and does not have another student's name in the slot. (this does not need to be your last lesson but should be towards the end and scheduled about a month in advance)
License tests are NOT scheduled for you. These will typically be during spartan period as close to your eligibility date as possible. Please reach out to an instructor to schedule your license test in advance.
