Folklorico Dancing is a long standing tradition stemming from Mexican culture. Walsenburg, Colorado is home to the oldest folklorico dance troupe in the State of Colorado, El Fandango. Characterized by flying skirts and traditional mexicain music this form of dance is a beautiful reminder of the past, present, and future of our area. El Fandango practices dances from various regions of Mexico.
Colcha embroidery is an endangered traditional art endemic to Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado. Using traditional churro wool yarn, colcha is a very material-conservative practice that allows people to weave a lot of color into their work without using a lot of yarn. Sandy Dolak was taught this practice by experts in San Luis, Colorado and has been charged by those experts to teach the practice to others to keep the art alive.
