Science 6

About the Class

Science 6 is an integrated science class, tying together topics in geology, biology, and physical science. We begin with a focus on Minnesota geology and the effects of glaciers on the landscape. We move to a focus on self, exploring cell biology and how several organ systems work together to maintain homeostasis. We end the year learning and applying Newton’s Laws of Motion in rocket building engineering challenges. Throughout the year, we intentionally build student and science skills. Students practice observing, recording, and analyzing data. Students develop presentation and writing skills as they communicate results. Each unit has hands-on lab activities and engineering challenges.

The sixth grade science curriculum has been designed to promote and enhance scientific curiosity and interest through a variety of explorations. Students will be expected to work individually and as part of a cooperative group depending on the activity. An emphasis on teamwork and respect for class materials, peers, and instruction will be a consistent part of 6th grade science. Most importantly, we plan to have a lot of fun learning and discovering together!

Class expectations

Students are expected to:

  • participate positively in class (Engaged)

  • work cooperatively and effectively with a variety of people. (Lab partners, discussion groups, project design groups)

  • contribute to class discussions (Prepared with readings and questions regarding the readings, lab analysis, and conclusions)

  • be prepared with completed homework on time so that they are able to participate fully in class discussions and activities. (This may include readings, note taking guides, videos, lab analysis and conclusions, and project work)

Assignments

Check the whiteboard in the classroom to stay informed about your assignments. Assignments are posted on Veracross.

Assessment and Grading

While 6th grade students do not receive letter grades, students are continually assessed on their knowledge of science process skills, scientific thinking skills, and content knowledge. Several methods are used to assess student work, including the following:

  • Homework completion and thoroughness

  • Labs

  • Quizzes and performance assessments

  • Student-designed projects
