Basic Information about the toefl:

The TOEFL is one of the most commonly required exams for studying at English-speaking universities and colleges around the globe. It is important to know what the TOEFL is, how to study, and what to study.

The following is an excerpt from ETS.org, the makers of the TOEFL:
"The TOEFL iBT® test has 4 sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. During the test, you'll perform tasks that combine these 4 English communication skills, such as:

read, listen and then speak in response to a question

listen and then speak in response to a question

read, listen and then write in response to a question"

The test is broken up as follows:

  1. Reading: 52-72 minutes 20-40 questions Read passages and respond to questions

  2. Listening: 41-57 minutes 28-39 questions Answer questions about brief lectures or classroom discussions

  3. Break: 10 minutes

  4. Speaking: 17 minutes 4 tasks Talk about a familiar topic and discuss material you read and listened to

  5. Writing: 50 minutes 2 tasks Read a passage, listen to a recording, type your response

We recommend begin by taking a practice exam. Then, strengthen your weaknesses and sharpen you strengths. There are many different ways to prepare, so you need to find what works best for you!

There are enough free resources available so you do not technically need to purchase any materials if you do not want to. However, if you want maximize your TOEFL score, you may want to look into buying some official materials and guides. You can find a link under the "Official TOEFL Resources" section below.

Official TOEFL Resources

Although there are many different resources you can purchase, the only official supplier of 100% authentic resources is through ETS.

Vocabulary Resources

  • Quizlets compiled by Austin

    • If you do not know the words on the test, then you will struggle. Although you may not know 100% of the words used, this resource can be helpful to learn and review English words that may appear on the TOEFL.

Practice Exams and General Overviews

  • Free Mini Sample Test

    • This is from ScoreNexus. This link will take you to the free "Sample Zip Test." It is approximately 1 hour long. To do this, you will need to:

        • 1. Click "Add to Cart".

        • 2. Click "Next" in the bottom right hand corner. Be sure the top right corner says "Total $0.00".

        • 3. You will be prompted to create a new account. Create your own account.

        • 4. Click on the green arrow next to "Sample Zip Test".

        • 5. Take the free Sample Zip Test by clicking "Start".

      • ScoreNexus has many paid tests that will automatically grade the exam for you. Those can be helpful, but costs real money.

  • How the Writing and Speaking Sections are Scored

    • This resource walks through how the writing and speaking sections are scored so you can be aware of how to successfully answer these types questions.

  • Good Luck TOEFL Reference

    • This website is fantastic, but can be overwhelming at first. This website is full of tips, examples, and lessons that can help prepare for the TOEFL. The majority of the resources are free, but there is an option to purchase the material.

  • Purdue OWL

    • Purdue OWL is one of the MOST POPULAR grammar references used in colleges across the USA. This reference site is full of examples of grammar rules. If you have any questions about a grammar rule, citing sources, or ANYTHING English, this is the website to check out!

  • Websites with articles and stories to help improve your English:

    • Read Works

      • You need a student account for this. To sign up, you need a Google Email and then to go to www.readworks.org/student and enter VGQXFK into the "Class Code" box.

    • News ELA

      • You need to create an account for this. To sign up, go to https://newsela.com/quickjoin/#/CCM246 and click "It's my first time here". Then, fill in your information. You can then click on any article and read it!

    • Read Theory

      • You need to create an account after selecting "Sign Up", then "Student", and fill in your information. You will take a pre-assessment after you create your account. This will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Afterwards, it will give you tailored readings fit for your level to help you grow as a reader!

    • This is a great resource for writing prompts and examples.

  • Purdue OWL

    • As mentioned before, if you have any questions or doubts about writing, Purdue OWL has the answers. Use this resource to learn specific rules, see examples, and to answer any questions when it comes to writing grammatically correct.

  • YouTube Videos that mimic the actual TOEFL test (HIGHLY recommend):

  • TST Prep TOEFL

    • As you have seen in the sections above, TST Prep TOEFL is a fantastic resource to use! They have a multitude of resources available and you can sign up to receive emails and tips for the TOEFL.


  • TOEFL Prep Academy

    • Just like TST Prep, TOEFL Prep Academy is an incredible resource for students and has plenty of resources for students to use to study! They have many videos that mimic the TOEFL.


  • TedTalks

    • Although TedTalks are not specifically about the TOEFL, they are a great resource to practice your listening skills while also learning new concepts! The videos vary in length and on topic. Some topics may be challenging!

Learning English BBC (Highly Recommend!)

At Learning English BBC, you can download the audios of the podcasts from their website and even the transcripts! It has quizzes, questions, and audios to practice your listening skills. You can read the transcripts to practice your reading!
