CEL Student Associates

Program Overview

Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Associates support community-engaged learning, both on and off campus. CEL Associates participate in ongoing training and reflection sessions with the OCEL and develop skills in project management, communication, facilitation, and community-building.

How to Apply?

The CEL Associates work 4-10 hours a week (4 for On-Campus positions & 10 for Off-Campus positions). Associates are paid $8-9.00/hour.

Expectations:

During the Year

In addition to the CEL Associates work at their community (10 hours) or faculty placement (4 hours), they participate in ongoing training and reflection sessions with the OCEL.

Commitment to full participation in the program activities is required:

  • A required orientation at the beginning of the Fall semester
  • Follow Southwestern student payroll policies
  • Attendance and participation in monthly CEL Student Associate meetings
  • Presentation at Creative Works Symposium

Next Steps:

The organization will contact students for an interview based on qualification/experience. Hiring time frame will vary for different organizations. The organization will contact the applicant and the Director of Community-Engaged Learning of the selected candidates for the positions.

Once a position has been offered and accepted, the student is required to complete the mandatory Business Office paperwork as well as a contract.

Positions:

  1. On -Campus CEL Associates assist faculty with community-engaged learning courses. (up to 4 hours a week or 56 hours a semester) Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Locating appropriate community partnerships
  • Nurturing community learning partnership(s)
  • Regularly communicating with faculty and community organizations
  • Coordinating evaluation and assessment of community organizations, students, and faculty

2019-20 On-Campus Positions

2. Off-Campus CEL Associates are placed at Georgetown community organizations. The CEL Associates serve as a bridge between the organization and the campus, with the core purpose of developing community-engaged learning partnerships. (up to 10 hours a week or 140 a semester)

In addition to responsibilities at the community organizations, CEL Associates are responsible for the following activities:

  • Identifying appropriate community partnerships for courses
  • Nurturing community learning partnership(s)
  • Regularly communicating with OCEL and community organizations
  • Coordinating evaluation and assessment of community organizations, students, and faculty
