Freedom Elementary P.E./Health Happenings

Welcome to our Freedom P.E. /Health Department. We have two full time P.E. Specialists, Coach Mendez, and Coach Vaquera. We are very excited to be here and are looking forward to a fun year with your child(ren).

P.E. Mission Statement

Our mission in P.E. Health class is to teach students to become physically fit, develop healthy choices, and create a love for lifetime sports. By doing this, they will grow into productive, healthy, and active adults that will contribute to their community, and succeed, in life.

Student Participation

Students recieve 135 min. of P.E. every week. Freedom Students are required to wear tennis shoes, and loose filling clothing to be able to participate. Health is taught also. Personal Hygiene, community leaders, saying no to drugs, the muscular system, skeletal system, cardio-vascular system, and Nutrition classes are held, each year.

About Coach Mendez & Coach Vaquera

Coach Mendez - I've been in Education for 36 years. I have a Bachelor of Science from the University of Incarnate Word, in Physical Education, and Health. I also have a minor in Secondary Art, and am also certified to teach Secondary Spanish

Coach Vaquera - I've been in Education for 6 years. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Spanish.

Annual Events

Listed below are several events Coach Vaquera, and Coach Mendez coordinate throughout the year for the students at Freedom Elementary.

September:

Pennies for Patients Benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

September-June: The following PE units are taught at Freedom Elementary: Volleyball/Flag-Football, Basketball, Soccer, Baseball/Softball, Track n Field. We also include Indoor games, so that our Students, can learn to socialize, follow rules, and learn to have some fun!! Thursday is Walking Day(weather permitting). Our Groundskeepers have cut a walking path, that is 1/4 of a mile. This helps keep our Students stay active, and healthy.

October/November/December:

Nutrition classes. 6 Lessons in Nutrition given by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension-Nutrition Division. Students learn about My Plate.gov., and how to count calories, prepare food correctly, how to serve portions, and they get to taste 3 recipes that are made during the sessions.

November thru March:

FitnessGram Testing for 3rd/4th/5th graders. They are tested in the following components. Curl-ups, Push-ups, shoulder stretch, trunk lift, PACER (running test), and student's BMI is determined by their height, and weight.

February:

Jump Rope Rope for Heart-(now Kids Heart Challenge) -Benefiting the American Heart Association. Students jump rope, and do other physical activiites, for two days, during their "specials" time, and collect donations, for prizes. This is our biggest event.

Student/class pictures are taken during "specials." All assemblies, dances, electronic day, and movie days all take place in the Gym.

May:

The Grand Daddy of them all! Field Day! 3 days of fun activities take place in the Gym, and out on the field. Each grade level has 1 hour and a half, to enjoy about 20 different activities set up, to test their skills, Some of these activities include: Sack race, tug '0 war, 25 yd dash, frisbee throw, ring toss, and many more!!
