Team 6A - Peek in a Week

MATH:

This week students will begin working in Unit 2: Introducing Ratios. Students will be able to use ratio language to write, say and describe ratios, draw diagrams with labels to represent a ratio, and understand equivalent ratios using recipes.

They solve problems involving lengths and areas of figures with fractional side lengths and extend the fohttps://player.vimeo.com/video/513058816rmula for the volume of a right rectangular prism to prisms with fractional edge lengths and use it to solve problems. They use tape diagrams, equations, and expressions to represent situations involving partitive or quotitive interpretations of division with fractions. Given a multiplication or division equation or expression with fractions, they describe a situation that it could represent. They use tape diagrams and equations in reasoning about situations that involve multiplication and division of fractions.

SCIENCE
This week, students practiced writing CERs (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning). They learned how to make a clear claim, support it with evidence, and explain their thinking with reasoning. Students also completed a graded CER assignment that showed what they’ve learned about measuring light in lux, as well as how light can be transmitted through materials or reflected.We are continuing our investigation of the one-way mirror phenomenon, and students are building strong connections between their observations and scientific explanations.Next week, we will begin Lesson 6, which investigates light interactions and the structure of the eye, helping students understand not only how light behaves, but also how we are able to see.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students will begin their first inquiry arc for Europe. Students will randomly be assigned a historical "era" for Europe and begin to research that time period with teacher selected resources. Please see attached flyer for a contest for 6th graders. FLYER

10/14-10/17

This week we will continue in our first unit--Characters Who Change and Grow. We will start the week with a lesson on determining theme. Students will learn to determine a theme by analyzing key details of a story. Later in the week we will also complete our last reading lesson of this unit. Using the text “Raymond’s Run”, students will determine a theme by analyzing how a protagonist changes through interactions with secondary characters. We will also continue grammar and usage activities with a skill focus of punctuating nonessential elements. As part of homework students should be reading for 30 minutes five times a week during Flex or outside of school. Finally, students have been assigned a Target Lesson in CommonLit to prepare for our upcoming second unit skills assessment.This homework assignment is due by Friday, October 17th. Our unit skills assessment is scheduled for Tuesday, October 21st and Wednesday, October 22nd.
