¡Bienvenidos a mi clase de español!

Información de la clase (course information)

Overview:

The middle school Spanish program establishes an understanding, respect for, and appreciation of the Spanish-speaking world. This course will emphasize both oral and written communication skills in the target language, and focus on such through a variety of tests, quizzes, projects, and classroom activities. Throughout Spanish 1a (7th grade) and 1b (8th grade) students will learn essential vocabulary and grammar, beginning with the basics of alphabet, numbers, and greetings, and continuing through present and past tense verb conjugations. Hispanic culture, customs, and geography are also explored in order to foster a greater appreciation of the countries in which Spanish is spoken.

This course is based upon the national and state standards and the five competencies of:

(1) communication, (2) culture, (3) connections, (4) comparisons and (5) communities

*Together, Spanish 1a (7th grade) and 1b (8th grade) are equivalent to the Spanish I course at Southington High School. The successful completion of both middle school courses may result in a student’s placement in Spanish II for grade 9.

It is important to note:

2016-2017 includes a number of changes to the SPS World Language program and, as such, will be a brand new experience for students. We are implementing a new curriculum that focuses on real-world communicative tasks. The district’s expectation is that classes will be conducted 90% in the target language for both teachers and students.

Please understand that there will be days when your student may come home frustrated and know that we do not expect students to understand everything that we say in Spanish or French, however, they need to stay focused and use the strategies they have learned to communicate and understand as much as they can. English will be used sporadically and strategically to check for understanding and communicate essential information.

***Effective 9/17/2013 Kennedy Middle School has adopted a new district-wide Middle School Grading Policy

Grades are averaged as follows –

  • 0% = Homework (will NOT be graded, but will be logged solely for completion)
  • 20% = Classwork/Graded Work
  • 35% = Quizzes
  • 45% = Test & Projects

All work that is collected and graded will be valued out of 100 points. Homework will NOT be graded, but will be logged solely for completion. However, with class being taught 90% in the target language homework completion is helpful to student success in class, as many assignments will foreshadow or reinforce in-class topics.

Please note that assessments for students with IEP's, 504 plans, or in an EIP process are differentiated as prescribed by those respective plans and it is the expectation that the parents of those students affected by this have already been notified and are in agreement with the arrangement.

If you wish to receive extra help at any time during the year, please come and talk to me -- I won't know that you need help if you don't ask me!
