Art classes within the middle school will expand on the elementary foundation in understanding and skills in the visual arts in an exploratory manner consistent with the middle school philosophy. The students will develop sophisticated creative strategies, skills and habits of mind through artistic practices. They will acquire increased knowledge, skills and craftsmanship in their art making and new media. The students will develop an increased knowledge in aesthetic judgement when making and understanding the meaning of art. They will look into the meaning, importance and purpose of visual art. The students will increase their knowledge in historical and cultural tradition through art.

Art is separated into three trimesters consisting of 30 days with Dry Lab with me and Wet lab with Miss Szymanski each trimester. The Art Department Dry Lab will be covering several units which will include several 21st Century Skills. These skills will help students advance their learning in Art and other Unified Art Departments. The curriculum covered during dry lab:

World Cultures/Art History- Students will develop their knowledge of social and cross cultural skills and identify an artwork from a particular movements.

Self-Image-Use accurate facial proportions to express self through either 2D or 3D art materials. Identify and apply the art elements and principles used in other artists’ work to better communicate ideas.

Perspective-Create an illusion of depth by using background, middle ground, and foreground with the focus on atmospheric perspective.Use a vanishing point on the horizon line & implement converging/orthogonal lines to create a convincing illusion of depth.

Technology-How to manipulate various tools and software. Understand that the elements and design principles of art as applied to digital media.

GRADING POLICY

Weekly Grade- Productivity and Accountability (21st Century Skill):

*Their weekly grade is worth 20% of their grade and a total of 100 points.

Directions/Rules

Followed directions /rules did not need any corrective issues.


Attention

Paid attention in class and stayed on task.

Conflict

Got along with others and was pleasant, followed directions and didn’t disrupt class.

Work ethic was exemplary and put extra effort in to do well.

Followed directions for tools/computer use did not need any corrective issues.


Final Project Grade

All grade levels will be using the same Rubric. The Rubric for the project will consist of 5 objectives. Some of these objectives include the 21st century skills and the 4 C's which are: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Critical Thinking. Their Final Project grade is worth 45% of their grade and a total of 100 points. The objectives are for a Proficient and Advanced grade:
