Franci Chapman, Unified Partner

Hi! My name is Francie Chapman. I am 13 years old. I attend Canyon Junior High. I enjoy playing basketball, running track, skiing, riding horses and baking. Last year, I was introduced to Unified Basketball. I practiced for a month and then played in a tournament. I truly had the best time! I loved meeting new friends and spending time with them. Shortly after this tournament, the Covid Pandemic hit and we were not able to continue with the other Special Olympics Sports. I can’t wait for the Special Olympics events to begin again. My goal this year is to get the word out about these amazing people and events. I want more people to be involved in the Special Olympics Events. I want others to be blessed as I have been by being apart of of this organization.

Riley McElroy, Unified Partner

Hi my name is Riley McElroy and I am a 7th grader at Bushland Middle School. I enjoy playing football and basketball. I am honored to be a part of Special Olympics and promote inclusion through competition and fun.

The Sims family has been able to participate in Special Olympic right along with Ross. Randy, Sue and Callie have all be volunteer coaches in different sports along with helping transport athletes. Fund raising is always an experience for the entire family. Standing on street corners in Amarillo taking donations or any other way to help support Special Olympics.

Special Olympics has totally been a family experience that has changed everyone for the better. The athletes, the families, the volunteers are so uplifting and truly become Family and friends. Our family and Ross invite anyone to join in Special Olympics and be changed for a lifetime.

Erin, Dr Medford, and Medford Family

Healthy Athletes, Special Olympics Texas

Hello! My name is Erin Medford. I am 18 years-old and I am a Junior at Amarillo High School. I have Down syndrome, and I have been a Special Olympics athlete since I was 7 years old. I have participated in many sports in Special Olympics including bowling, basketball, swimming, track, soft ball and bocce ball. My most favorite sport is basketball. I have played on several different teams for Special Olympics including the Advo Dream Team, the Canyon Eagles and the Amarillo High Cluster Team. I have made so many friends through the Special Olympics events and competitions. The different sports keep me active, and I really enjoy the social interaction with the other athletes, coaches and volunteers. Due to the COVID pandemic, Special Olympics athletics and events have been put on hold. I truly miss competing in Special Olympics and interacting with my fellow athletes and coaches.

Patti Ballew

Athlete and Board of Directors for Special Olympics Texas

My name is Patti Ballew and I started my journey with Special Olympics 13 years ago. I enjoy participating in Powerlifting, Athletics, Bowling, Bocce, Tennis, Soccer, Volleyball, Golf, and Flag Football. I went to Abu Dubai to compete in Power lifting in 2019 and I participated in the World Games Tennis Invitational in the Dominican Republic in 2018. I trained between 3-6 days a week to get in shape for my trip to compete in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle where I received 3rd place in the squat, 4th in the bench press and 4th in the dead lift. In my Division overall I received 4th place. I placed 2nd in squat, 4th in bench press, 4th in deadlift and 4th overall in powerlifting at the World Games in Abu Dhabi. It was truly an experience that I will never forget.

Being active is important to me to stay healthy. I am most proud of my being a role model for the younger athletes. I was not given the opportunity to participate in Special Olympics at an early age. I often wonder what my school days would have been like if I had been given the chance to have the Unified Program in my school like they do today.

I serve on the Special Olympics Texas’ Board of Directors and the Area 16 Athlete Leadership Committee. I have traveled to Washington DC to lobby on behalf of athletes in the state of Texas. I am a Global Messenger with Special Olympics and I enjoy giving speeches about my experiences. With my participation in the Global Messenger Program I have overcome my shyness and love to speak to a large group of people. I even introduced Tim Shriver when I went to Washington, DC for Capital Hill Day and wasn't nervous at all.

I enjoy meeting new people and being introduced to new cultures and different countries. Special Olympics has given me the opportunity to explore the US and to go to places and meet people I never would have dreamed of meeting.

I have worked with TJ MAXX for 7 years. Over this seven year span I have become more independent, self-sufficient and my self-confidence has grown. I am a hardworking, valuable employee and I love my job.

Family is very important to me, whether it be my biological family, my Advo family, Special Olympics Family or my T J MAXX family. I am very excited to represent each and every one of you. I take pride in everything I have accomplished.

My faith is important to me because through Christ all things are possible. For every challenge I face I see blessings twofold every day.
