The CT Open Choice Program in Somers



The Open Choice program allows urban students to attend public schools in nearby suburban towns. Enrollments are offered by school districts on a space-available basis in grades K-12.  Participation is open on an equal basis to all students, including students with disabilities, attending public schools in Hartford. Transportation to and from participating districts are paid by the state. Arrangements are made by the regional educational service center serving the area.

Somers Public Schools values its families and sponsors family engagement evenings to connect with families of students enrolled in Open Choice.

Students enrolled in SPS via the Open Choice program are encouraged to participate in after school events/programs/sports. There is a daily bus scheduled from Hartford to Somers for Open Choice students and, if needed, additional late bussing can be provided/coordinated via Open Choice transportation at the building you attend. 


Affinity Groups

All students enrolled in Open Choice have multiple opportunities throughout the year to get together during the school day to share successes, shared challenges, and develop solutions. It allows for meaningful conversations in a safe space.
