Our CAS students have been able to experience a way of life from a completely different from their own, and see, first hand, the result of fundraising, and their service efforts on the island of Caohagan, Cebu, Philippines
CAS students raised over ¥1 000 000 for the construction of school houses, and yellow boat transport for students on the island. The first school house we helped to build doubled the size of the available classrooms and outfitted the community with essential tools and equipment.
We also sponsored the construction of “Yellow Boat(s) of Hope.” Cebu is mostly made up of island communities, many of which have no school of their own. The only way students can go to school for essential education is to use the roadways, and hence pay for daily transport fees. Being an island community, traveling to school by boat is the logical solution. Along with many other supporting agencies, we have funded, and assisted in the construction of these yellow boats for the use on Caohagan island.
On our last trip students were able to create a variety of international activities, and make a Japanese style curry for the children of the school. After the adding of more spices to the curry, and joyful enthusiasm from our students, everyone had a great time for the two days we were there.
TYPHOON AID
Just before Christmas of 2021 Coahagan was hit by a devastating typhoon which destroyed a number of homes, including many of the school boats. Fortunately, the school house we helped construct still stands and is serving as a shelter for displaced families. Although our fundraising efforts are not as strong as they used to be before Covid, we were able to put together ¥300,000 to be sent for emergency funds to pay for generators, tools, relief equipment, and food. We have the fundraising efforts of the 2020, 2021 graduating classes to thank.
