Hi! I am Seung-Yoon Back, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Prof. Tiffany A. Shaw. I received my Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Seoul National University under the supervision of Prof. Seok-Woo Son and Prof. Daehyun Kim.
I am interested in atmospheric dynamics, with a particular focus on quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) dynamics. My research involves utilizing various numerical models to reproduce QBO disruption events and understand their underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, I have studied the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) dynamics during my Ph.D. I have investigated the variability of the MJO with slowly varying background conditions such as El Niño/Southern Oscillation and the QBO.
Research interests
My research interests are
QBO dynamics: QBO modeling, QBO disruption
MJO dynamics: MJO Diversity and relationship with background conditions
Stratosphere-Troposphere coupling: QBO-MJO connection
