Hi! I am Seung-Yoon Back, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Prof. Tiffany A. Shaw. I received my Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences at Seoul National University under the supervision of Prof. Seok-Woo Son and Prof. Daehyun Kim.
I am interested in tropical atmospheric dynamics, covering phenomena from the equatorial stratosphere to the troposphere. My work explores the dynamics of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and how these systems interact across vertical layers of the atmosphere. I combine theory, observations, and numerical models to investigate the underlying mechanisms of these phenomena. In particular, I use a hierarchy of models ranging from idealized radiative-convective equilibrium simulations to comprehensive climate models, along with reanalysis datasets.
Research interests
My research interests are
QBO dynamics: QBO modeling, QBO disruption
MJO dynamics: MJO diversity
Stratosphere-Troposphere coupling: QBO-MJO connection
