Dear families,
I hope this finds you all safe and well. It has been a tough term for absence due to Covid for both staff and students; I think we all hope the worst may be behind us as we move into spring and some hopefully warmer weather. On a positive note, we have much to celebrate when we look back on Term 3; Fi Bradbrook, Vice Principal joined us in January and has already made a seamless transition into her new role and has already made an impact across the life of our academy. Fi has been made welcome by everyone and is a great asset to our team.
We have finally, after many delays mostly due to the pandemic, opened Infinity, our community café. A café open to the public, which our students will have the opportunity to work in, has been a goal of mine ever since I was fortunate enough to help design the building and curriculum at Snowfields. To finally see it open, and hear the positive comments from our guests has been wonderful. Please do visit us; without customers our students won't have the excellent vocational opportunities this excellent venture provides. As our students go up through the academy there will be more opportunities to try out one of the many roles and gain vital experience for future employment. Special thanks go to Neve, one of our Year 10 students who is a true asset behind the counter and has given up many lunchtimes out of choice to work there.
I would also like to thank Notcutts who have been incredibly supportive and have given us many discounts and freebies over the past few months. Helen, our gardener, has worked really hard to cultivate (no pun intended!) this relationship which we hope will continue to blossom (sorry!) over time. Notcutts have kindly donated thousands of bulbs and staff and students have worked hard to plant them around the academy grounds. I can't wait for spring when they will bring some colour and joy to all of us.
If you are getting away over the half term I hope you have a wonderful holiday, and for everyone else I hope you are able to enjoy some relaxed time together as families and rest and relax as we move into the second half of the school year. I'm sure you will join me in thanking our staff for their hard work, enthusiasm and support of our wonderful students.
Best wishes,
Dee

I'm Kate, the newly appointed Student Services Manager.
I started when the school opened in September 2020 as a Teaching Assistant. I loved the role and knew I wanted to do more for the students and families here at Snowfields.
I will be supporting the academy by working with parents, to help build positive relationships and help overcome barriers to ensure pupils can successfully access their learning.
I will be supporting the social and emotional needs of our young people, as well as supporting them to make the right choices.
I will also work alongside parents/carers to identify why pupils are not achieving good attendance and assist in reaching a high attendance rate.
My contact email address is studentservices@snowfieldsacademy.org.uk
PC Chloe
We are really fortunate to introduce PC 15091 Wade to Snowfields Academy. PC Chloe is our school police officer and this term she has been coming into Snowfields to meet with the students and staff to discuss how she can become more involved within our school community. PC Chloe led an assembly this term with her colleague PC Samuel. The assembly was delivered to all students, during the assembly PC Chloe and PC Samuel explained their roles and responsibilities, talked about their experiences as police officers and gave the students opportunities to ask lots of questions. PC Chloe will continue to work alongside the staff and students at Snowfields to ensure the school continues to be a safe and positive environment for everyone to learn.
Willow
Hello everyone,
Another busy term at Snowfields. I have been working hard to support the students this term and in return I have received lots of cuddles. I have become a part of lots of students' daily routines which I really enjoy. I get visits in the morning and I help prepare students for their school day. Some students come and see me at lunchtime, I enjoy their company and cuddles. My favourite visits are in the afternoon as I know students are coming to see me because they have been working hard throughout the day. I am really proud of the students and give extra love for hard work.
I am really excited because more staff are being trained to work with me which means I will be able to go into more classes and see the great work all the students are doing, I can’t wait!
I hope everyone has a lovely half term and I look forward to seeing everyone in term 4.
From, Willow!
The students at Snowfields are very supportive of each other. They enjoy taking on responsibilities. We have a bug hotel at Snowfields that the students take great pride in. An insect hotel, also known as a bug hotel or insect house, is a manmade structure created to provide shelter for insects. The Bug Hotel consists of several different sections that provide insects with nesting facilities – particularly during winter, offering shelter or refuge for many types of insects.
We really appreciate all the time put into taking care of the bugs on site at school!
Thank you
We have a range of clubs running for the students at lunchtime:
We also have brought a range of playground equipment for the students for break times which have included scooters. The students have really enjoyed using them and it is wonderful seeing them so positively engaged at play times.
Kooth:
Snowfields staff have recently received training from Kooth PLC. Kooth is a digital company that provides mental health and wellbeing support to students all over the UK. More information will follow soon. We will be setting up student information sessions for next term as well as a Snowfields parent event. If you are interested in learning more about Kooth please read their Letter for Parents & Carers. You are also welcome to attend their Parent/carer webinar on Thursday 24 February 2022, 6-7pm.
Term 3 Science
Year 7 has been learning the science of waves and the transfer of energy, and also aspects of space science. Lessons have explored how sound waves are produced, how they travel through the motion of particles, and their properties of pitch and volume. We have also studied light waves, and can explain how differences in wavelength of visible light result in different colours. This knowledge of the visible spectrum of light was then extended to the entire electromagnetic spectrum, ranging from radio waves all the way through to gamma rays, with knowledge of the properties and applications of the seven wave categories. Finally, we completed several lessons on space science, exploring our solar system, the Milky Way galaxy, and the almost unimaginable scale of the Universe beyond.
Year 8 has been exploring the topic of Healthy Lifestyle. This has included a close look at the essential nutrients that we require for a healthy and productive life, lifestyle choices that can have detrimental effects, and exploration of the contents of food, food labelling, and the use of food tests to verify the presence of specific types of nutrients. There has been an investigation of the structure and function of both the respiratory system and the digestive system, the latter included a hands-on practical to model the digestion of food all the way through the digestive process from food to faeces (though thankfully the actual output was not as challenging).
Year 9 has been exploring the scientific foundations of pyrotechnic fireworks. This has been a wide-ranging investigation that has included atomic level explanations of chemical reactivity; the study of explosive materials; the flame-colours produced by a range of metals; the process of combustion; explanations of exothermic and endothermic reactions in terms of energy emitted or absorbed; and the theories of motion, kinetic energy and gravity. Who knew that there were so many strands of science underlying the sound and spectacle of pyrotechnic fireworks? Well, our Year 9 students do now!
Year 10 has been investigating three GCSE topics: The Periodic Table and trends within specific groups; Chemical Quantities leading to balanced chemical equations; and most recently Forces and Energy Changes. The chemistry lessons have explored the fundamentals of atomic theory, the nature of elements and recognition of trends in properties within three key groups in the Periodic Table. Lessons on chemical quantities underpin understanding of how to quantify amounts of material required as inputs and expected as products from chemical reactions. The investigation of forces and energy has introduced fundamental concepts of Physics that will be employed frequently in later modules of the course.
KS3 Maths
Students have been completing a differentiated project around theme parks, looking at the mathematical elements that go into planning and designing a theme park from scratch.
This has include angles, scales and technical drawings.
Students have come up with some fantastic and imaginative ideas.
Term 3 English
Year 7
Year 7 have been reading War Literature this term; Farah have been analysing War Horse and Newton looking at Carrie's War. Both classes have been using both the text and the film versions and comparing the differences between the two.
Students in Newton created postcards home from Carrie and Nick. You will see an example below by Noah and Phoebe, both beautifully written and decorated.
Year 8
Year 8 have been working on News Writing, looking at the conventions of Newspapers and recreating the style in their own writing. Students have written articles, biographies, weather reports and much more.
Year 9
Year 9 have been studying Literary heritage for the past two terms and have progressed onto Poisonous Poetry; heritage poetry with a sinister theme. Austen class looked at William Blake's 'A Poison Tree' and created their own version using a theme of nature and linking to a human emotion. Joshua H's poem addresses the greed of man in a very Tolkienesque piece.
Communications
It’s been a ‘funny’ start to 2022 for the Year 8 and 9s as our Communication lessons have focused on understanding and sharing humour. Students have learnt about different types of humour and being teenagers, sarcasm was the clear favourite. They enjoyed sharing jokes, videos and memes with their class and explaining their views. We have also had discussions around cultural differences in humour and when joking and teasing go too far and could be considered bullying.
The Year 7s have been learning about the different parts of a conversation. We have reviewed video clips and analysed conversations to see what has gone well and what is missing. The students have enjoyed working with a variety of peers to practice these skills and at the end of the term we used the website ‘Storyboard That’ to make comic strip conversations. It has been a great start to the new year and I look forward to seeing the students putting these skills into practice.
Year 10 students have taken to the Art GCSE really well. Each student has now completed a short induction unit based around organic forms.
Some of the images here represent their outcomes within this topic.
Students have now moved on to start their personal portfolio units of coursework, something which they will focus on for a number of months. Topics within this unit are chosen by the students, with themes as varied as 'celebrities and social media', 'sportspeople as modern idols', and 'virtual architecture' all being explored by different students!
On Friday 4th February, Year 10 students had a workshop with Magistrate Alvin Shaw.
He talked about how people's actions have consequences and what the scale of these consequences are.
Students were able to ask questions about how a court works and hear real life stories about how people's choices impacted their lives.
Humanities
This term students have been studying Geography.
Years 7 and 8 have been exploring maps. We looked at the history of maps and how our perspective of the world has changed over time as human exploration expanded globally. Students learned about Ordnance Survey maps and are not able to locate places using 4-digit and 6-digit reference numbers. We finished off the term by becoming cartographers and drawing a map based on a description given by a tourist!
Year 9 have been learning about volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis.
We've explored tectonic plates and how these boundaries are the reason for some of the destructive forces of nature.
We also learned about the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2021 and considered the short and long-term effects and impacts on the country.
Through case studies, students also explore the Boxing Day Tsunami and the 2010 volcanic eruption in Iceland.
The Snowfields Facebook Page is up and running!!
Please like the page and see what the students do day to day at Snowfields.
Your support will be much appreciated.
