TEACHER FEATURE

Each week one or two teachers will be featured in this column. I encourage parents and guardians to check out eLedger each week to learn more about our excellent high school faculty! You may also look at archived eLedgers to see any previous Teacher Features you may have missed.

Mrs. Patricia Burns Arndt is a proud life-long-Ledger alumni who returned to the Springs to serve as an English teacher in 2019. Before joining the staff of SMSA, Mrs. Arndt taught language arts, reading, literature and writing enrichment at Holy Angels School in West Bend for 12 years. She is openly enthusiastic and committed to mission driven Catholic education, enrolling her own children at SMSA. Her son Thomas is a current senior (SMSA ‘23) and her daughter Virginia (SMSA ‘18) has followed her mother’s pathway to the classroom and is now teaching K5 on the Ledge!

Mrs. Arndt earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire. She holds a lifelong teaching license from the Wisconsin DPI currently teaches sections of English 9 and English 11. In addition to her teaching duties, Mrs. Arndt has served as co-moderator of the Yearbook for the past three years and is currently a Freshman homeroom teacher and class moderator.

Regarding her commitment to the SMSA mission, Mrs. Arndt explains that she was raised in a family of strong faith and that “Catholic values and experiences are the foundation of my life and have guided me in the ways in which I teach and live.”

Mrs. Kathy Bartel has served as a teacher in the Social Studies Department since 2011, but has been employed with SMSA since 2009. Before joining the Social Studies faculty, Mrs. Bartel served as the SMSA Media Director and Yearbook advisor, a duty she still holds today! Prior to coming to the Ledge, from 2006 - 2009 Mrs. Bartel served as a long term substitute teacher for several area school systems, including New Holstein, Chilton, Kiel and Fond du Lac. In that role she taught courses in US History, Foreign Policy, Sociology, Psychology, American History and World History.

Mrs. Bartel earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Marian University where she was a summa cum laude graduate! She is licensed by the Wisconsin DPI to teach middle school and high school. Currently she teaches sections of World History, Honors World History, Contemporary Issues, Psychology and Writing for Publications (Yearbook). She also teaches Sociology on an every-other-year cycle. In addition to her teaching duties, Mrs. Bartel is the Student Government Moderator at SMSA. In this role , she helps the Ledger student government to learn the traditions of the Springs, embrace servant leadership, develop their many talents, collaborate with administration, and share their gifts with the whole school community.

Mrs. Bartel is passionate about teaching, her family and also about her faith. For many years she served as a Christian Youth Advisor and Confirmation Instructor at St. Mary Visitation Parish in Marytown, WI where she remains a dedicated volunteer. Mrs. Bartel builds strong rapport with students, and appreciates how SMSA fosters “belief in the importance of nurturing the spiritual aspect of student lives.” Someday, ask her about the publications she has contributed to: History by the Lake, Marytown: Built on Dreams; and Persisting on Spirit and 100 years of Vision and Dedication: St. Mary’s Springs.

Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

This Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, The JED Foundation is helping students, educators, and caregivers have open and important conversations about suicide. JED wants everyone to know that It’s

OK to Say Suicide. In fact, it’s the first step on the journey to getting help.

On the Suicide Prevention Awareness Month landing page, you can listen to the stories of nine amazing young adults whose lives were saved by saying suicide and asking for help and find resources on how to have these conversations that you can share with your school community.

County K Speed Limit

With the newly paved and widened County K, between 151 and Winnebago Drive, please be cognizant of the 35 mile per hour speed limit. The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office has received concerns regarding excessive speed in the hour before and after school.

The Sheriff’s Office will be placing a radar trailer on that portion of County K to monitor speed. Please have a conversation with your student drivers on the importance of following the posted speed limits on all roadways, and being aware of people walking.

School Safety

As always, if you or your child become aware of a potentially dangerous situation that may threaten campus safety, we urge you to contact the Fond du Lac Police Department.

To report life threatening urgent matters, please dial 9-1-1. To report concerns that may not be urgent, please call 920-322-3700. You may also call the high school main office at 920-322-8062.

Speak Up/Speak Out (SUSO)

Created by the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of School Safety (OSS), the Speak Up, Speak Out Resource Center (SUSO) is a comprehensive, one-stop place to turn with important concerns currently offering: threat assessment consultation, critical incident response, and general school safety guidance.

Visit the SUSO website for additional information on these three services as well as resources on school safety best practices.
